The Unexpected Beauty of Mentoring Tomorrow's Leaders: My Professional Passion

The age-old question often circulates in professional circles: "What do you enjoy most about your career?" For many, the answers range from job security to work-life balance, and maybe even the occasional office snack bar. But for me, the answer is incredibly clear: I get to shape the future of the industry by mentoring, coaching, and developing the best new talent into tomorrow's leaders.

Collaboration: The Gateway to Unearth Hidden Gems

I firmly believe that every voice counts, and this is especially true when we're talking about talent development. You'd be surprised how often a diamond in the rough reveals itself through the simple act of letting people express their opinions and share their ideas. What's even more intriguing is that the individuals who turn out to be the greatest success stories are often not the ones I initially pegged as rising stars. The lesson? Never judge a book by its cover; you'll miss out on some of the most compelling reads.

Diversity: The Secret Sauce of Operational Excellence

When I'm building out any operational team, diversity is my north star. And I'm not just talking about race or gender. I aim for a rich tapestry of backgrounds, ages, ideologies, and educational experiences. In fact, I often go against the grain by not making formal education the end-all-be-all criterion for selection. Trust me, the degree from an Ivy League school is impressive, but what's more valuable is a natural curiosity, drive, and ambition. It's incredibly rewarding to have a Duke graduate and a recent Crenshaw High School alum work side by side, representing the very diversity of the consumers we aim to reach.

A Culture of Continuous Learning

Imagine a workspace where an older woman, new to e-commerce, is learning the ropes alongside a tech-savvy youngster skilled in Excel and dabbling in machine learning. This kind of diverse, egoless culture is the ideal breeding ground for both individual and collective growth. The beauty is that everyone is constantly learning—whether it's a new skill or a fresh perspective—by collaborating with people who don't share identical life experiences.

Investing in Lifelong Success

My goal is simple: I want to do everything within my power to prepare my team for the next phase of their careers. This means downloading all of my knowledge, coaching, and training so that everyone is well-equipped to take the "keys to the kingdom," so to speak. Interestingly, the downside of this approach (which I actually see as an upside) is that most team members eventually move on to new opportunities, either within the company or elsewhere. Regardless, I continue to cheer them on from the sidelines.

The Art of Stepping Aside

When the moment comes that my team is fully capable of running the day-to-day operations without me, that's my cue to step aside. It's a bittersweet but empowering decision, opening up new growth opportunities for myself and ensuring that the team continues to flourish with the shared knowledge we've built over time.

So, what do I love most about my professional career? It's the privilege of fostering the next generation of leaders. And when they rise, we all soar.
