What drives data burden in HE?

I've been thinking a lot about data burden recently. It's been an issue in HE for decades and I think it is increasing.
I've set out some ideas about what drives the level of data burden that institutions experience. The analysis is based on a simple model of the activities that take place across the lifecycle of data submissions.
I'm sure this analysis could be better. If you are involved in HE data please take a few minutes to look at what I've set out and let me know what you think.
If we can build a better understanding of what drives burden then we will know where to focus attention in the future.

1 年Nice one Andy. I belive strongly there is an aspect of student related data is critical to HEIs and it's how they use their own data to support student success. Cheers

1 年One thing HE could do is to adopt DevOps style approach to data, ie continuous use and improvement of data quality, and more regular preparation for data reporting cycles. Automating the processes involved in taking BAU and preparing it for data returns would let institutions better assess their data quality and improve it for day-to-day use. The Phoenix Project (book) could be a good read for improving data in HE, using it as a model to remove waste (poor quality data), improve internal reporting, and maybe even get their data ready for delivery to Data Futures. In my experience, institutions have sometimes said they are too busy and underfunded to improve their data. My view is they are too busy and underfunded NOT to improve!
