What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger: Embracing Resilience

At the beginning of this year, I set a goal to write a LinkedIn article each month. However, as life often does, it threw a few curveballs, and I missed May. I had a plan to write about mental health, especially focusing on being diagnosed with ADHD at 39, because May was Mental Health Awareness Month, but I guess that story will have to wait for another time.
Not going to lie, 2024 has been a tough year. There have been numerous challenges across different aspects of life, which compelled me to write about resilience. I have to admit, I was not a fan of the concept of resilience at first. My initial understanding was flawed; I believed resilience was merely about pushing through a situation, seeing it through, and then bouncing back.
However, I have come to realize that resilience is much more than that. It's not just about enduring hardship and returning to the status quo. True resilience is about thriving in the face of adversity, adapting, growing, and emerging stronger than before.
Personal Experiences with Resilience
As a mom of two boys, I’ve learned firsthand the art of balancing family responsibilities with my career aspirations. Juggling parenthood while pursuing my professional goals has been a journey of resilience—waking up at 5 am to get things started, mastering the art of meal prepping, and staying organized amidst the whirlwind of daily life.
Running has also become a vital part of my resilience-building journey. Currently training for a marathon, I've discovered that endurance isn't just about physical stamina but also mental strength. Pushing through fatigue and self-doubt during those early morning runs mirrors the resilience required to navigate life’s challenges.
Choosing to pursue a PhD in engineering, I humorously acknowledge that I opted for a career path that demands resilience on a daily basis. Each setback and obstacle I encountered during those rigorous academic years became a lesson in perseverance and personal growth.
Reflecting on pivotal life events, the same year I got married, I also graduated with my doctorate degree and unexpectedly lost my father—a period marked by both triumphs and heartaches that tested my resilience and grounded me.
My personal journey through motherhood, academic pursuits, and running has underscored the diverse ways resilience shapes our lives, paving the way for its broader implications in personal and professional growth
The Importance of Resilience
In today's fast-changing world, resilience is a critical skill. It allows us to navigate uncertainty, overcome obstacles, and maintain our well-being despite the pressures we face. Building resilience helps us handle stress more effectively, recover from setbacks more quickly, and ultimately achieve our long-term goals. As we continue to face an unpredictable future, developing resilience will be essential for both our personal and professional success.
Components of Resilience
Resilience has many components, including psychological, emotional, and physical aspects that help us thrive (not just survive) in the face of adversity. Being resilient does not mean that you will never experience stress or failure—both are simply part of life. Resilient people embrace these feelings and face challenges head-on, rather than avoiding or being unaffected by them. Resilience is about how we respond to and recover from these tough experiences.

Resilience is not something that just comes naturally to everyone; at least it hasn’t for me. It is a skill you can develop, just like public speaking, conflict resolution, and adaptability. You can strengthen your resilience skills over time through practice and experience. Some strategies that have worked for me in building resilience include mindfulness and meditation, positive thinking, gratitude (note to get back to my gratitude journal), goal setting and planning, and building and investing in a supportive network.
Resilience in Personal and Professional Life
And since this is a LinkedIn article after all, I need to weave in the workplace somehow, right? ?? Resilience is a skill that not only helps us in our personal life but also in our professional life. In today's often unpredictable work environment, resilience is crucial for maintaining productivity, fostering innovation, building stronger teams, and ensuring overall well-being.
Leadership and Resilience
Let’s start with leaders. Leaders play a critical role in modeling and promoting resilience within their teams. When leaders demonstrate resilience through their actions and attitudes, they set a positive example for others to follow. This can involve transparent communication during tough times, maintaining a calm and solution-focused mindset, and showing empathy and support for team members. Leaders who prioritize resilience can inspire their teams to face challenges with confidence and determination.
Building Resilient Organizational Culture
To cultivate resilience throughout the organization, it's essential to embed it in the organizational culture. This creates an environment where employees feel supported and valued, and where challenges and mistakes are approached with a growth mindset rather than punishment. Achieving this isn’t easy, but it can be done through various initiatives. These include offering workshops and training sessions on resilience-building techniques, stress management, and mental health. It also involves fostering open communication where employees feel comfortable discussing their challenges and seeking support. Additionally, promoting work-life balance by encouraging employees to take breaks, use their vacation time, and prioritize their well-being is crucial. Lastly, recognizing and rewarding resilience by acknowledging and celebrating employees who demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity reinforces its importance within the organization.
Implementing resilience initiatives within an organization is a proactive step towards fostering a supportive and thriving workplace culture. By prioritizing resilience, companies not only empower their employees to navigate challenges effectively but also cultivate an environment where personal and professional growth can flourish.
Conclusion
In conclusion, resilience is not just a skill but a mindset—a mindset that empowers individuals to face adversity with courage. Whether in your personal life or professional career, integrating resilience-building practices can lead to greater well-being, enhanced productivity, and sustainable success.
