If your business disappeared tomorrow, who would care? For many businesses, this is a question that exists in the back of everyone’s mind but doesn’t ever really get addressed on a regular basis. This is an unfortunate reality because, for many people, having a purpose is integral to feeling successful in your career.
If you want to create a team of people who are dedicated to the work, they do, hashing out your “why” is crucial.
Consider Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, who says, “I don’t create companies for the sake of creating companies, but to get things done.” The workforce he’s created from his innovative way of approaching problems is known for logging long work weeks, but they rarely complain because they clearly see the “why” in their efforts.
They believe in the change that they are playing a role in creating, and therefore stay on board and give their all.
Once you’ve answered this question, keep it at the forefront of your mind as you work.
Write up a mini-mission statement for yourself and keep it taped to your office wall.
Write it in the corner of your whiteboard. Type it out on a label maker and attach it to your computer monitor. Whatever you have to do, make sure that your WHY is visible to help inspire and push you through your day.
I'm curious to know, what is your mini-mission statement?
