What does Your Social Media Activity Say About You?

Whether you are new to the working world, or not, it never hurts to step back and ask: “What is my social media presence communicating to a current or potential employer, my co-workers, or even customers?” This is something you need to think about -because they are definitely watching. According to a survey by Career Builder, sixty percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates. And the impression you make on social media could prevent you from getting an opportunity.

A good social profile is about putting your best foot forward, and it is important to keep a balance between the personal and professional information in your posts. If you have a nice picture, complete bio, and your past posts show your personality and interests in a constructive way, you may still want to make sure your content presents your business knowledge and interest.

Think about the 3 areas of yourself that you should make known from your social activity:

  • Personality – Present your human side by sharing personal pictures of yourself, your friends, and your family. Of course they should be 'safe for work.'
  • Outside interests – Let it be known that you are a well rounded person with interests and causes you care about. Use social to offer links and tips about your current hobbies and activities.
  • Business – Show your professional expertise by mixing in an equal amount of posts about what you know, what you have learned, or what you can do in your chosen profession.
