What does your profile say about you…?
Many years ago I was speaking to a very successful business person and I asked them which page of the website they thought was most important…they said the news page, because if I log on and there hasn’t been a post for a month it means either they have nothing to say…or they’ve gone out of business!
This is so true of social profiles for both you and your company.
If I stumble upon your LinkedIn profile and have a look and see that you’ve not posted, liked or commented on anything for 6 weeks I can only assume that you are an “occasional” user of the network…or perhaps have fallen ill! Either way, it doesn’t show you as being an active, interesting and dynamic person.
So given that you want people to think that you are someone who’s worth having a conversation with, you need to be posting stuff…and more than you think.
Twitter is a real-time network…which means that whatever you post now is invisible (pretty much) in 5 minutes time, so if you’re not posting several times every day what possibility s there of you ever being seen. The same on LinkedIn, most people seem to have 500+ connections these days and many of these people post most days at least once. This means that you need to be fairly active to be seen, for example, if I log on an look at 20 updates that means that the chances of me seeing you are 1 in 25 (assuming that I have 500 people in my network and they only post once each per day…if I have 5000 then the chance is 1 in 250) not very good odds!
That means that to be active…and successful…and profitable from your time on social media you need to be active and busy and posting loads. Posting once per day (10 times per day on Twitter) is the absolute minimum if you want to start harvesting the incredible value that these networks have. But this isn’t going to happen without hard work and perseverance…and a plan.
Make the plan…make it happen…don’t be “gone”!
