What does your ideal team member look like?
As we're growing the team at Hypestar, we're recruiting for new trainers, so I've had the opportunity to speak to lots of really interesting people - some with a training background, some not - some with a digital background, some not.
The massive benefit that it has brought me is the opportunity to really think about what my ideal team member looks like. Contrary to what you might think, it isn't another me - don't get me wrong, that holds a certain appeal (I mean, who wouldn't want two-plus James', right?), but to grow and expand and be able to help as many businesses as possible, I needed to look at people who were different...different to me; better at different things than me.
So as I thought about it, and took the time to speak to people who have come in to talk about the position, I realise that the qualities of the person are far more important to me than the abilities of that individual. You see, you can teach digital skills (I've built a whole business around the premise), but you can't teach values, ethic or passion. So finding the ideal person might not look like you'd expect.
Who we are?
We're not a super-techy agency (although we do deliver at that level for some clients). The majority of our learners are small businesses and sole traders who want the introduction-level to stuff - they want their hand holding as they embark on their digital journey - and we're really good at that. The skill is knowing the difference.
So I realised that what I'm looking for, what I need, is someone who shares my vision - not someone who shares my hobbies.
What does your ideal team member look like?
So what about you? What are the factors you look for in your ideal member?
Is it the 'technical' skills of your business? Are there overriding factors that are more important?

6 年To bring in a team to work with would be fantastic and who knows maybe one day! I think I would look for people who challenge to think about alternative solutions or an approach to a solution. I think this is because I have no one to currently do that so it can be lonely when you are trying to grow your business on your own. So it would have to be someone who is happy to have a voice and be passionate about helping other companies to grow. Obviously it would be someone with a financial background but also someone who is happy investigating the numbers and not take them at face value. I also think I would prefer to share success and allow the individual to grow so must be motivated to build the brand.

6 年I am absolutely on the side of people with passion, enthusiasm & interest rather than technical knowledge. Those are definitely things you cannot teach someone, but paramount to their & the business' success in my mind. In my corporate life I built my team full of bright sparks who just loved their lives & the career opportunity they were being offered. And still now when I look for associates / referral partner I keep this in mind. I just couldn't work with someone who doesn't have those qualities.

6 年I think your right about looking for the unteachable qualities. They are foundational. You can learn the rest but in what you do surely there needs to be an element of self motivated interest in the subject matter as it evolves so quickly. Having been trained by you, one of the best things from my perspective is that you know so much about so many subjects and you talk with passion about them because you are interested. I am sure you will get the right person, good luck in your search ????
