My line of work allows me to meet with leaders of just about every industry you can think of...
The first thing I notice about these individuals is how they attempt to gauge my energy when we first meet. Seeing them pleasantly surprised is always a thrill, since it’s a bit like arriving for a blind date (or so I imagine).
Your energy says so much about who you are and what you value. Yet, it’s something that most people greatly struggle with.
The good news? You can take control of your energy and amplify your presence with a few intentional shifts. Here are 5 practical tips to help you show up as your best self, every day:
1. Pre-charge before the big moments
Instead of waiting to recharge after you’re drained, prep your energy ahead of high-stakes situations — like an important meeting or quality time with loved ones. Block off 5 minutes beforehand for a quick walk, a deep breath, or something lighthearted that lifts your mood. My Tesla does it, and we should, too. Set yourself up to shine when it matters most.
2. Ground yourself in the moment
Ever notice how your energy dips when your mind races ahead or lingers on the past? Before your next big interaction, pause: take a deep breath (4-7-8 breathing works well), feel your feet on the ground, and focus on the here and now. Presence isn’t just calming — it’s also scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, allowing you to show up as your best.
3. Ditch the "burnout" language
Phrases like “I’ll just push through” or “I need to unplug” signal energy on autopilot. Our expectations are almost always fulfilled, so be very careful with the language you use. A better approach would be to replace them with a proactive question: “How can I set myself up to bring my best here?” This small tweak keeps you intentional, not reactive.
4. Make space for what matters
A packed schedule suffocates your energy, leaving no room for inspiration to strike. Scan your week: What’s one commitment you can drop or delegate to free up mental and emotional bandwidth? Creating space isn’t selfish — it’s how you close the gap between your current performance and your potential.
5. Start with gratitude, every day
Part of the Win the Day journal template is feeling gratitude. Not thinking it, but feeling it — and there's a big difference. If you can incorporate that into your morning routine, you'll be leveraging one of the most researched actions in positive psychology, scientifically proven to boost energy, reduce stress, and improve well-being almost immediately. It’s a simple reset before life’s chaos kicks in.

Remember, your energy is a reflection of who you are and what you value. That can help you obtain opportunities, strengthen relationships, and improve just about every aspect of your life. Master it, and you’ll not only win the day but inspire others to do the same.
Onward,
James
