What Does It Take To Be A Successful Freelancer?

Introduction

I'm a freelancer, and I love my job. There are many things that make it possible for me to have this career, but there are also some common pitfalls that can derail the dream of being a successful freelancer. Here's what they are:

Grit

Grit is the ability to keep going in the face of obstacles. It's having the perseverance to keep trying until you finally achieve success.

Many successful freelancers have grit in abundance, and it often takes them years of hard work before they find their footing and begin making money. The ability to persevere through failure and rejection is key for any freelancer looking to turn his or her passion into a career.

Focus

Here are some ideas on how to stay focused:

  • Focus on the task at hand. If you spend your days jumping from one thing to another, it's going to be harder for you to stay focused and do quality work. Make sure that every task has its own beginning and end, especially if it's a project with an actual deadline.
  • Focus on the goal. Have a plan in place for what you want from a freelancing career so that your goals stay clear as well as attainable. That way, whatever happens will be part of reaching those ultimate milestones instead of just random occurrences in life.
  • Focus on customer service. If someone has paid money for something—whether they're paying upfront or after the fact—they deserve good service! This means being accessible when they need help or have questions about their order, replying promptly if they reach out via email or phone call...and making sure they're happy once everything is done with their satisfaction guaranteed!

Skills

Great freelancers are good at a lot of things. They’re good writers, listeners, problem solvers, decision makers and time managers—but that’s just the beginning! Successful freelancers also understand the importance of managing their money.

If you're interested in becoming a successful freelance writer, it's important to develop these skills from the beginning so that they become second nature before you begin working for clients.

Ethics

You should treat everyone with respect, even the people you don't like. You can be friendly and professional at the same time, but be careful not to cross any lines—after all, you will always have to work with these people again in the future.

Business is a relationship game and it takes a long time to build up good relations—and even longer if you ruin them!

Consistency

Consistency is the key to success.

That means setting a schedule and sticking to it, creating a routine that works for you, and not letting yourself get distracted. Don't worry about other people's work or their success levels. Focus on your own work—and do what it takes for you to produce your best possible work every day!

Positive attitude

Positive attitude is a choice. It’s something you can train yourself to have, and it comes from within. If you want to be successful with your freelance writing business, you need to have a positive attitude because that will help you build the confidence and motivation required for success. Your clients will notice your positive attitude and choose to work with someone who they know has their best interests at heart.

You can train yourself to develop a more positive outlook by learning how to overcome negative thinking patterns, including:

  • self-doubt
  • fear of failure or rejection
  • low self-esteem

You can master the skills, be ethical and consistent, and stay positive.

You can master the skills, be ethical and consistent, and stay positive.

You’re a freelancer. You love what you do. But if you're not making money doing it? That doesn't mean that there's something wrong with you—it just means that there are more things we need to learn about how to run a successful freelance business.

In fact, I had to learn how myself when I transitioned from being an employee of others into running my own full-time freelance business.

There were so many things I didn’t know! What kind of equipment should I buy? How much should I charge for my services? How much work do I need to land before getting paid (or at least not going bankrupt)? What should my company structure look like? And on top of all this stuff, there was also lots of emotional stuff happening too: am I good enough at my craft yet? What if no one hires me ever again?!

Conclusion

So, what does it take to be a successful freelancer? The answer is simple: you can master the skills, be ethical and consistent, and stay positive.
