Powering the best performing networks worldwide

When it comes to network performance, users want fast, reliable, and always available connectivity. If a communications service provider wants to meet their expectations, the network must constantly evolve to keep up the pace.?

We are proud to contribute to the best performing networks worldwide. One of the highlighted proofs is that our customers achieved first place in 72% of public network performance benchmark reports (January 2023 to January 2024) done in markets where Ericsson RAN equipment is present. We use a defined metric called “Public Benchmarking Win Rate” to measure this benchmark, which relies on the existing public benchmarks from various entities.?

Another highlight comes from 2023 Umlaut benchmarking reports with active and passive measurements: Ericsson RAN equipment powers 5 out of 6 CPS winners, 3 of which are 100% Ericsson RAN.??

Opensignal’s 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards in October 2023 listed 13 networks powered by our RAN equipment as winners out of 19 in total. According to Ookla Speedtest 5G reports in 2023, Ericsson is leading with an 80% win rate, ahead by 16 points and 35 points from the other network infrastructure vendors.?

But let’s step away from external network performance benchmarking firms for a moment and turn to country regulator campaigns. Korea is one of the most advanced and competitive countries in terms of connectivity. According to Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea, service provider’s SKT Korea network is outperforming in all the regions where Ericsson RAN equipment is deployed.???

Software innovations for supreme network performance in action

At this year’s Mobile World Congress, among other news in the portfolio, we presented some of our software innovations for supreme network performance. Check out the stories about their implementations and results.?

Ericsson's Uplink Carrier Aggregation software enabled Ericsson, Elisa, and Qualcomm to hit high speeds for uplink-heavy apps in live 5G standalone network.

Together with Ericsson and Qualcomm, Telstra achieved the world-first 340 Mbps uplink speed over 5G Standalone using sub 6 GHz frequencies in a live commercial network, enabled by the latest software, spectrum, and technology innovation.

BT Group, Ericsson, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. have successfully demonstrated end-to-end consumer and enterprise 5G differentiated connectivity enabled by network slicing on Ericsson’s 5G Core and Radio Access Network technology.

In the news release published by Verizon, read about Verizon’s and Ericsson’s trial of advanced Low-Latency, Low-Loss, Scalable Throughput (L4S) capabilities that will optimize Verizon’s 5G network for more robust solutions like interactive video, remote control of industrial processes, augmented reality and virtual reality.


Why networks need to evolve to 5G standalone

5G standalone takes 5G performance to a new level, with capabilities that deliver a more powerful user experience, enhanced network efficiency, and new business opportunities. This flexible and programmable cloud-native service-based architecture enables communications service providers to upgrade, create, and deploy new services in hours rather than days or weeks without impacting live services.?

Out of 300 live 5G networks, 49 have already been upgraded to 5G standalone, according to a March 2024 GSA report, with 32 of them powered by Ericsson. Also, GSMA states in its latest report from February 2024 that within the next 2-3 years, 79% of mobile operators will deploy 5G standalone.?

Massive MIMO is crucial for providing superior 5G performance

A month ago, we launched 12 new hardware and software innovations enabling communications service providers to capture the next step towards 5G Advanced (find out more in one of our previous editions).??

These portfolio enhancements were led by the flagship product AIR 3255, the most sustainable Massive MIMO time division duplex (TDD) radio to date. With more than 25% energy savings and a 20% lower embodied carbon footprint, it will incentivize mid-band deployments.?

This doesn't just apply to only Ericsson Networks, but band width is only as good as your noise floor and as long as sale of broadband repeaters that aren't regulated and other devices operate in your band then the bandwidth and capacity of your network will never reach peak performance.
