What Does It Take to Get to Zero Waste???

Welcome to Suits & Tides, the sustainability newsletter with more knowledge than microplastics in the ocean! In this episode, our senior sustainability analyst - Sanjit Misra shares his thoughts about zero waste.

Can you imagine a world without waste??

What if we told you that many organizations loudly proclaim their commitment to improving waste management, yet silently stall on taking any substantive action? In a time when the environmental stakes are higher than ever, merely acknowledging the problem isn’t enough. By rethinking how resources are managed, businesses can drastically reduce their environmental footprint while fostering a more sustainable economy. This transformation is crucial as global waste generation is projected to dramatically rise by 70% by 2050 if current patterns persist.

It’s time to ask: Are businesses truly ready to commit to zero waste, or is it just another buzzword on their materiality matrices and sustainability agendas??

The Essence of ‘Zero Waste’

Zero waste is more than a goal; it's a transformative approach that challenges conventional waste practices and strives for a sustainable future. According to the Zero Waste International Alliance, zero waste is a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient, and visionary, guiding people to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.? According to the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) initiative, zero waste involves designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials. Essentially, TRUE Certification for Zero Waste defines it as a system where all materials are designed to be reused, thus preventing anything from being sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean.

Why is zero waste important? It represents a crucial pivot from a linear economy—where we make, use, and dispose — to a circular one, where we loop resources back into the production cycle. This shift not only conserves resources but also significantly reduces environmental impacts, paving the way for organizations to commit to genuine and gimmick-free sustainability.

Implementing Zero Waste: A Guide

Implementing zero waste involves a detailed and strategic approach:

  • Diversion and Avoidance: Start by setting a robust diversion target—typically a 90% reduction in waste sent to landfills and incinerators. Employ composting, recycling, and anaerobic digestion to handle waste more sustainably.

  • Upstream Management: Engage with suppliers to ensure that all materials entering your business are recyclable or compostable. Partner with them to innovate in packaging and product design to minimize waste.

  • Reduction and Reuse: Move beyond management to actual waste prevention. This means minimizing resource use and extending the lifecycle of products through designing for durability and reparability.

  • Innovation in Waste Processing: Explore creative waste reduction strategies, such as upcycling—turning waste materials into new, high-quality products.

  • Education and Training: Conduct comprehensive training programs for employees to foster a culture of sustainability and ensure everyone is aligned with zero waste goals.
