What does it take to get to the next level?

What does it take to get to the next level?

To survive any profession, you need to be good. However, to survive the legal profession, you need to be a great lawyer. And if you are aspirational and want to get to Partnership, you will have to get out of the comfort zone and ask yourself what skills do your bring to the table at the business level:?

  • Are you good with Relationship development (internal & external)?
  • Are you good at Team management (not just juniors but also colleagues)?
  • Can you build a practice that adds to the firm growth?
  • How well do you adapt to change?
  • Are you comfortable with technology?

You need to learn differentiation. A law degree or legal expertise is not your differentiator. The answer is, it’s your brand. What do the firm and the team collectively work towards?

You may ask - why is brand building important? The answer is, that your brand will determine your culture. Your culture will determine the hiring strategy and the firm’s core values. The core values will be imbibed by every single hire of the firm (irrespective of designation and job profile). Greater buy-in for the brand, culture and values will ensure that only the best stay on. All of this put together helps build sustainability.

Your individual growth story/ firm growth story will evolve constantly.
