What Does It Mean to Be a True Leader?

What Does It Mean to Be a True Leader?

Friends, when I ask during my training sessions, “What is a leader?” I get all kinds of answers.

Some people say, “A leader is someone who handles the team.” Others think, “A leader means a political figure or someone with a high designation.” Many say, “A leader is the manager or the CEO.”

Then, I ask a different question: Can someone be a leader without holding a big title or even without being in a traditional workplace? For example, I think about my mother. She doesn’t have a formal position at a company; she doesn’t manage a team or hold any corporate title. Yet, in many ways, she embodies leadership at home. Some people hesitate at first when I call her a leader, but in reality, leadership goes far beyond job titles or positions.

In this newsletter, I’ll share my thoughts on what I believe defines a true leader. This understanding has come from my personal experiences, reflections, and what I’ve applied in my life.

1. A Leader Starts with Initiative?

At its most basic level, a leader is someone who initiates. A leader doesn’t wait for others to take action; they start things. This could mean beginning a project, starting a new way of doing things or helping someone without being asked. Leaders step up and create positive change.

You don’t need a big role to start. Imagine a classroom where students have some issues—maybe it's understanding a subject or helping a friend with their studies. The person who steps forward to help, offer ideas, or suggest improvements is showing leadership.

2. A Leader Influences Others, Not Just Impresses?

True leaders influence people; they don’t just try to impress them. There’s a difference between influence and impressing. When we try to impress, we might do something just to get attention or praise. However, influence comes from genuinely inspiring others through our actions and values.

Think of it this way: imagine you’re under constant observation, like you’re on CCTV, and people are watching you every day. When you behave kindly, work hard, and make responsible decisions, you inspire those around you. This type of influence is powerful because people see your actions and feel encouraged to act similarly.

A leader’s influence comes from consistency and authenticity. They don’t pretend to be someone they’re not. They lead by example, and their actions align with their words. This builds trust and respect, two essential qualities in any leader.

3. Leadership Isn’t About Titles or Jobs?

Many people associate leadership with titles like “CEO” or “Manager,” but leadership is more about action and attitude than any job title. In fact, some of the best leaders might not hold any formal position at all. Think about people in your life—parents, teachers, friends—who inspire you and support you without needing a title.

For example, a class monitor may not be the smartest or most popular student, but if they’re responsible, helpful, and respected, they can lead effectively. Leadership is about being dependable and supporting others, not about holding power over others.

4. Leaders Lead by Building a Positive Environment?

A true leader creates an atmosphere where everyone feels motivated, valued, and part of something meaningful. This could be in a classroom, a family, a community, or even a sports team. Leaders bring people together, fostering a sense of connection and purpose.

For example, if you’re working on a group project and you encourage each person to contribute, highlight their strengths, and ensure everyone’s voice is heard, you’re leading with companionship and creating a positive environment. Leaders understand that when people feel included and appreciated, they’re more likely to do their best work, which benefits the whole team.

5. A Leader Is Courageous and Gives Honest Feedback?

One important part of being a leader is having courage. A true leader is brave enough to give honest feedback, even if it feels awkward or uncomfortable.

For example, I always try to create a friendly and supportive environment for my team. I love to encourage everyone and celebrate their strengths. But I also know that it’s essential to be honest if someone isn’t doing their best or meeting our goals.

This doesn’t mean being mean or critical; it means helping them improve. True leadership isn’t just about saying nice things or telling people what they want to hear. It’s about being brave enough to talk about the things that need to change.

When a leader gives honest feedback, it can help others grow and do better. Sometimes, hearing the truth can be tough, but it can also lead to important changes and improvements. So, remember, a good leader is someone who is kind but also honest, even when it’s hard to say what needs to be said.

Bringing It All Together

In summary, being a leader isn’t about holding a fancy title or a big position. It’s about embodying these essential qualities:

  • Initiating Action: Starting what needs to be done, taking the first step when others may hesitate.
  • Influencing Others: Leading by example, inspiring others through actions rather than trying to impress.
  • Supporting and Uplifting: Helping and encouraging others, even without a formal title.
  • Creating a Positive Environment: Building a space of companionship where everyone feels encouraged, valued, and motivated.
  • Being courageous enough to provide honest feedback, even when it's uncomfortable.
