What does it mean to rewire?
When we used the word “hardwire”?20 years or so?years ago, it made sense. By hardwiring certain behaviors, tools, tactics, and practices we could ensure consistency. In many cases hardwiring still makes sense. Consistency is and always will be important in?healthcare as is the mission and values.?
On the other hand, a lot has changed over the past couple of decades. It is a different world. As things?evolve in healthcare,?certain tools, techniques, and actions?no?longer work?or?at least?don’t work as well as they initially did. Yet?in many cases?they keep being used because they are hardwired.
Some things don’t need to be changed. Others do. It’s a matter of asking “Is this practice working for us?” If the desired results are being achieved, leave it alone. If the results are not where you want them to be, it is time to take a fresh look at the situation.
Over the next few weeks, I will look at some areas in healthcare that often benefit from rewiring. These include tactics like rounding as well as areas like leader development, employee wellbeing, retention, and more.
I hope you will check back in here regularly. In the meantime, if you’d like to read more on this subject, I suggest you check out?Rewiring Excellence: Hardwired to Rewired,?a book I wrote with my business partner Dan Collard.
It boils down to this: rewiring takes a mindset shift. It’s not about discarding everything and starting over. It’s about adjusting our actions to make them more doable, flexible, enjoyable…and more likely to achieve better outcomes.

The key is to find that balance, to not change for the sake of changing, yet be willing to change were there are needs and opportunities to gain from change, while keeping other things stable and predictable.
