Passion and purpose are two powerful elements that can transform an individual’s life in ways unimaginable. They are like the north star guiding us in the right direction even when we trip and stumble through life's challenges. But what does it mean to have passion and purpose?
Having passion means you possess a strong, natural desire or love for something that propels you forward in life. This could be a hobby, a career, or even a cause–it is that thing that excites you, that keeps you awake at night, that motivates you, and that you are ready to pursue relentlessly, irrespective of hurdles and setbacks. You feel a sense of satisfaction, accomplishment, and happiness when you engage in that activity or endeavor. Passion is the flame that keeps you going.?
On the other hand, having a purpose means you have a clear understanding of, and commitment to, life goals that are significant to you and likely beneficial to others as well. Your purpose is the 'why' behind your existence, your reason for jumping out of bed each morning, and the big picture of what you wish to achieve or contribute to the world. It's about serving something greater than yourself, whether it be helping others, creating something innovative, disrupting the status quo, or simply nurturing a harmonious family environment.
In my upcoming book, "The Birth of Joy," I describe my personal journey of rediscovery of passion and purpose as a physician, as a wellness champion, and as a physician coach. Like so many physicians who followed the straight-and-narrow path toward becoming a doctor, I let my parents and the medical educational system tell me my purpose and dictate how I was going to achieve it. Only after experiencing burnout, and going on my own healing journey, did I start to honestly define my passion and purpose for myself.?
Passion is not necessarily static; it is fluid and can keep changing as you mature and evolve. What excited you in your twenties might not interest you anymore in your forties or fifties. With new life experiences, we form fresh perspectives and our interests and priorities change. Passion helps to map out a direction for your life's journey, and it involves commitment and dedication. It’s like a fire inside of you that keeps burning, no matter what obstacles come your way.
Conversely, purpose can extend beyond a specific career or job. Your purpose might be reflected in the different roles you play across varying aspects of your life. For example, it might emerge in your role as a parent, as a volunteer in community service, or as an entrepreneur. Your purpose is tied to your deepest values and beliefs, and gives your life a sense of meaning and fulfillment.?
The benefits of having passion and purpose in life are many. Having passion and purpose enhances our overall well-being and happiness, as we find joy and satisfaction in what we do. Passion and purpose provide us with a sense of meaning and fulfillment, ensuring that our lives are not spent in emptiness or boredom. When we are passionate about our work, relationships, hobbies, or any aspect of our lives, we exhibit a higher level of dedication, commitment, and motivation. This drive allows us to overcome obstacles and setbacks, pushing us towards growth and personal development.
So as you contemplate your next steps in your life or career, try to define what your passion and purpose are now, and how they might change in the future. It's important to regularly evaluate your values, interests, and goals to ensure that your passion and purpose are aligned with your personal growth and aspirations. Passion is the fuel that ignites our drive, motivates us to persevere through challenges, and keeps us engaged and excited about our pursuits. Purpose provides us with a sense of direction and meaning, giving our lives a sense of significance and fulfillment.
It is through the pursuit of our passions that we uncover our purpose, gain a sense of clarity, and find our calling, and our joy, in life.

1 年Love it. Passion has been something that is elusive- at least to me. When I have it foremost in my mind- passion makes all better, deeper, and happier! Purpose is like a compass for my life. I can’t wait for the book to come out- I’ll be sure to share it. ??
