What does it mean to gather in a digital-first world?

We’re more digitally connected than any other generation in history — yet, somehow, we’ve never been lonelier and divided. The World Health Organization estimates 1 in 4 older people experience social isolation, with serious impacts on physical and mental health, quality of life and longevity.

The simple act of coming together in person can feel like the ultimate act of courage, as fear of misunderstanding, hostility or simply not belonging can easily keep us locked behind screens and too deep in our feeds. Let’s take a look at how you can create space to overcome these fears and foster connection.

What does it look like to create a space that fuels empathy, insight and a sense of belonging?

One imaginative concept is the rise of “fourth spaces,” inspired by this report conducted by Eventbrite . Unlike traditional “third places” – think coffee shops, libraries and community centers – fourth spaces are about bringing together digital communities through real-life convenings. The idea is that our digital lives are here to stay, but we can use them as a catalyst for finding community outside the screen, too.

These fourth spaces are already bringing people together around shared passions — whether that’s cooking, art, gaming or activism — and giving them a chance to discover deeper parts of themselves through genuine connection.

At TED, we’re determined to nurture these spaces. In a world that can feel uncertain and sometimes even unsafe, we’re choosing to believe in human curiosity and the power of open-hearted exploration — and we’ve learned a few things along the way.?

If we design gatherings with respect and understanding, they can become sanctuaries where big, bold ideas take root and people from all walks of life unite to transform the world for?the better.

Looking to host a gathering of your own?

Here’s a few tips from TED speakers experienced in the power of coming together:

1. A gathering doesn’t have to be complicated to be powerful

Priya Parker’s recent TED Membership conversation, “How to come together in a meaningful way,” explores how even the simplest encounters can lead to lasting bonds.?

2. If you don’t feel like you belong, create a space where you do

Maryam Banikarim’s talk “Life's an obstacle course. Here's how to navigate it” reminds us that it takes a community to feel a sense of belonging.

3. Be brave and talk to people you don’t know

Kio Stark’s “Why you should talk to strangers” will have you rethinking chance encounters as gateways to empathy.?

3. Seek connection for the long-term

Brian S. Lowery’s “How to live a meaningful life” offers a profound look at the long-term effects of connecting and how they can help us live a life of purpose and meaning.

At the heart of each of these talks is a central truth: We grow when we gather.?

This week, we opened registration for TEDNext 2025 — the ultimate fourth space. It’s a vibrant exploration of what’s next for you, encouraging the future you — whoever that is! — to think expansively at every level, from personal to global.

At TED, every curiosity is welcome, every voice is seen, and all are invited under our growing tent of transformative ideas for good.?

In this moment of uncertainty, stepping away from our screens isn’t just a luxury — it's vital. That’s how we move toward unity, understanding and hope.

We encourage you to join us at a TED event — or even host a gathering of your own (check out these tips about becoming a TEDx organizer!),? because when we gather, we build a better understanding of those around us, build community and imagine a more beautiful, shared future.

Tell us in the comments: What’s one way you plan to bring people together this year?

?? ?? ?? ?? ??
