What does it mean to be fully authentic?
Some might ask themselves...
Who am I? What do I stand for? How do others perceive me? How do I perceive myself?
Or...
What is my impact on others?
At my core, I am a creator. I enjoy creating art, music, relationships, ideas, experiences, memories, knowledge, and value for others.
However, at times I feel like my creative side is not being used to it's full potential... or in other words, I am not being authentic with myself.
Why?
I get limited by negative self-talk and doubts of not being good enough or fearing judgement.
Over the last week I have been staying in the Selina hostel in Nosara, Costa Rica (Selina is amazing for remote workers). A few nights ago a karaoke night was hosted. After a few other guests went up to perform, I decided to face my self-limits and put my name on the list and invited my partner up with me.
We were both nervous and we have never sung karaoke together in public. But we also acknowledged that we would grow from the discomfort. Leading up to our turn, we began to think of excuses to bail...
We ended up going up and having a blast.
Surprisingly, a couple from France that sang earlier noticed our chemistry and complimented our voices. We later learned that they are celebrating their honeymoon and are in the process of producing music for their local radio station.
I instantly lit up with curiosity and inspiration.
I asked, "Are you musicians? How did you get started?"
"Not professionally, but my husband quit his job as a psychiatrist and we are now traveling and creating music together. He's always been a musician at heart."

As they shared openly and authentically with us, we began to open as well.
There was no need to hide. I shared my music with them the next day and noticed myself say, "I don't normally share my music. I get nervous seeing other people's reactions."
"Casey, you need to share your music. It is beautiful."
I feel most authentic when I am encouraged to be open and vulnerable, to express my thoughts and feelings, and let go of any doubts, expectations, and insecurities.
To be fully present with the moment and those around me.
AND
To make others feel like they can be themselves too.
Personally, I access this presence when composing, playing and sharing music. All my worries disappear for the moments I am creating. I express myself through notes instead of words.
