What does it mean to be dapper?
Emma Donovan
Co-founder, ideator and brand strategist at Dapper | We empower leaders through self-discovery
And why does it matter?
Rather than trying to give you a definition or an equation, I’m going to share a series of posts about dapper humans, their stories, and what impact they’ve had on my story so far.
My intention is to shine a light on the people that inspire me to be the most authentic version of myself, and in turn, hopefully inspire you to start this journey of self discovery. Because that’s what being dapper is really all about.?
Our process is designed to empower you to navigate life with quiet confidence, joy, and ease, sure in the knowledge of who you are and what you want. Then see the impact of this ripple out into the world.
First up is Chlo? Melville ?
When I first met Chlo, nearly three years ago, she was a UCT student looking to get some experience through part-time work. A few days later she become our very first employee at Dapper and damn has she set a high bar!?
Since then, Chlo has not only become an integral part of our team - who heads up the videography and podcast arm of the business - but she is also a co-creator of our online course Brand Yourself, she has started the KETS podcast with her partner Sam, and has a number of her own freelance clients too. And she’s done all of this by 23! A great reminder that we age not by years, but by stories.
Chlo really is wise beyond her years, grounded and brave. She’s a great listener, puts everyone she meets at ease and is always up for an adventure - including regular sunrise trail runs and icy ocean dips with me!
Here is a quick Q&A if you’d like to find out a little more:
What brings you joy?
Being creative is where I’m my happiest. Seeing ideas come alive for myself, and clients sparks incredible joy – I love it.?

What impact has Dapper had on your story?
Dapper has played a major roll in my professional, and personal journey. I joined Dapper in the middle of 2021 – eager for experience and to be part of an incredible team. The last (almost) three years with Dapper have given me invaluable experience, confidence and meaningful connections. I view Emma and Lindsay as my mentors, and I’m incredibly grateful to them for taking me under their Dapper wings.
Which of Dapper’s values do you resonate most with and why?
It’s so hard to choose, because they all resonate deeply with me; but I think my number one Dapper value is: ‘We Are Real’. Authenticity is at the core of everything we do at Dapper, and I think that’s our super power. We cut through the noise in order to share stories that portray the essence of the humans behind the brands.
What are you most excited about for the next chapter together?
Definitely working alongside Linds and Em in creating Dapper’s first online course, ‘Brand Yourself’. We’ve put so much work into creating a product that we’re all so proud of, and a product that we know will benefit so many people. I’m excited to see people experience it!
