What Does it Mean to Be Badass?

Look up the term “badass” in the dictionary and you might find an outdated meaning that says something like: “tough, uncompromising or intimidating.” Yet today, I’d beg to differ. Many people are definitely badass who don’t fit that definition.

Over time, the term has instead come to mean strong, confident and bold … one who knows their own mind, does what they want. A person whose attitudes, behavior and/or appearance are admirable.

A Psychology Today article on the subject matter extols: “a real badass is driven by values such as responsibility, justice, honor, courage, compassion, humility, integrity, and selflessness” … “someone who stands up for the weak and oppressed, speaks the truth, and calls out those who lie …”

It’s all about authenticity, empathy, and transparency. It’s practicing what you preach. Doing things fairly and balanced. And following through on one’s commitments.

So, how does one become badass?

I can tell you one thing for sure: it doesn’t come from reading a book. Nor does it come from flipping through a quote-a-day calendar.

As much as those things can help motivate and inspire you, they simply cannot change you. You have to change you.

And, let's be real. You can’t call yourself a badass if you're fake, lacking empathy, or irresponsible. (I mean, you can, but people will figure you out soon enough for who you really are and know you’re a fraud.)

Actions define a badass, not words.

And badassery comes from within.

What is badassery?

  • It is mindset, attitude, and sheer authenticity.
  • It is speaking your truth, even when your voice shakes.
  • It is overcoming adversity, accepting no other option.
  • It is showing up, doing the work, and fulfilling promises made.
  • It is sticking to your own purpose, dreams, and path you created.
  • It is removing anything or anyone toxic from your life that threatens your peace.
  • It is setting boundaries and enforcing them when people cross them.
  • It is living by your own code, not worrying what others think.
  •  It is determination, perseverance, and resilience.
  •  It is strength, confidence, and earned respect.

Being a badass can take you to great heights. Improve your reputation. Garner admiration. Being a badass can help you be successful. Earn more projects, more clients, more money.

But it absolutely, positively, 100% has to come from within.

YES, YES, YES!!! Thank you for the update!? I've been called a badass (by people I love) and shied away from embracing it because of the negative connotation. It's time to go buy some tee shirts!
