What does it mean to add value, really?

One phrase I often hear but I don’t understand: add value. What does add value mean? I hear it most often in the business context. And I confess that I don’t have a business degree and not well-versed with how businesses works and all that (even though I've been in the working world for 20+ years.)

I have noticed that there are a lot of business-minded and career-minded people here on Linkedin. I’m not as career- or work-driven, so I don’t use Linkedin here like many others nor as often. To be clear, I am not independently wealthy, far from it, so I do have to pay bills and make a living.

7 Ways To Add Massive Value To Your Business?

(from Entrepreneur magazine)

  1. The Faster The Better
  2. Offer Better Quality
  3. Add Value
  4. Increase Convenience
  5. Improve Customer Service
  6. Changing Lifestyles
  7. Offer Planned Discounts

And, there it is. Point number 3 is NOT helpful. That's what I thought the article was supposed to explain: “how to add value.” The blurb following the bullet point does eventually give a couple examples of what 'value' could be, like 'improving the packaging or the design,' or 'simplifying its method of use.'

add value to everything you do - excerpt

Um, okay, so that’s mostly what it comes down to. To use a frequently used term in the biz: it's all about the bottom line. Add value is doing things or offering extras to products and services, that make money. After all, business is about making profit. (That's not what it's all about, but it has to about that, at minimum.) 6 out of the 7 points in the article talk about increasing wealth and financial success.

How Do I Add Value Into the World

Now the question after the question is: how do I add value? I’m pretty clear, actually very clear, on how I add value and make a unique contribution with my life—and I have found that in my personal faith in Christ and living out a life of generosity and honesty.?

What I’ve found very elusive is defining what that added value would be in the working world with how my whole set of skills and passions can be monetized. That's what prompts people to look at my Linkedin profile.

I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.

I was listening to a podcast this morning and they mentioned something that I thought was a neat perspective.. As a leader/co-worker/friend are you depositing value or making withdrawals from your relationships... Thanks for sharing this post DJ Chuang- always love hearing from you!

I interpreted "adding value" as something useful or helpful but providing high quality free useful information. Not just surface level info that is bait for a "sale"
