What does Imposter Syndrome look and sound like?

Dear Women Leaders,

In previous newsletters I've talked about Imposter syndrome. This is a silent barrier many of us face in the workplace. Despite our achievements and capabilities, we sometimes find ourselves questioning our worth and competence. But here's the truth: you are more than deserving of your success, and it's time to silence that inner critic and step into your power.

Imposter syndrome in the workplace for women can manifest in various ways, both in behaviour and language. For instance, you might downplay your accomplishments or attribute your successes to luck or external factors rather than acknowledging your own capabilities and hard work. In meetings or discussions, you may hesitate to voice your opinions or ideas, fearing you'll be judged or dismissed. You might also constantly seek validation or reassurance from others, doubting your own competence.

In our interactions, we may catch ourselves using phrases like, "I don't deserve this," or "I'm just lucky." But let's reframe that narrative. You've worked hard, honed your skills, and earned every opportunity that comes your way. It's time to own your achievements and embrace your capabilities.

Physically, women experiencing imposter syndrome may display signs of anxiety or stress, such as fidgeting, avoiding eye contact, or speaking softly. They might also shy away from opportunities for advancement or hesitate to take on new challenges, fearing they'll be exposed as frauds. Is that you?

So how do we overcome imposter syndrome? It starts with self-awareness and self-compassion. Recognise your worth and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Surround yourself with a supportive network that uplifts and empowers you.

Let's also challenge the narrative of perfectionism. It's okay to make mistakes and learn along the way. Embrace the growth mindset and see setbacks as opportunities for growth.

As women leaders, we have the power to redefine success on our own terms. Let's inspire and uplift each other as we navigate the complexities of the workplace.
