WHAT DOES A GOOGLE DATA SCIENTIST LOOK LIKE?
This week I searched to establish what "Data Scientists," look like at Google, as from experience, the company is one that many deem a great environment to work as a Data Scientist.
The following results have been gathered from profiling 197 Data Scientists. That is people who have this specific job title at Google in the United States and currently (according to LinkedIn), still work there.
I hope that it proves useful and I have also shared some notes to share my thoughts as a Recruiter/HeadHunter within this area.
First things first, here are the most popular Colleges/Universities where people graduated from. There was quite a cross-section but, these were the top five:
It helps to have a Masters or Ph.D.: Out of 197 Data Scientists profiled, 164 people had a Masters and/or Ph.D.
Maths and Stats are most welcome: 53% of Data Scientists at Google (using this search), had a degree in Maths, Statistics or Biostatistics.
So, no real surprises there I am sure. I think what is interesting though is that the new wave of Data Science course graduates are coming through, as eleven are currently employed at Google from what I can see.
My advice remains the same, and that is, if you want to work at any of the major players in the market or you simply want to have your net as wide as possible for even more opportunities, do strive to get at least a Masters degree "under your belt."
Keep your eyes open for my next post where my lunchtime research will continue next week. I won't say who just yet but it will be another big name. I hope this proves useful.
