What does God have to do with Business?

What does God have to do with Business?

9/4/2020

I am often asked why I talk so much about hearing and obeying the voice of God when it comes to business. For lots of people, those are two areas of life that intersect very little or maybe not at all – which is exactly where I was until my early twenties. Now, I can’t separate the two. I was in college when I first learned practical steps on how to hear the voice of God and apply it to every aspect of my life. All these years later, it’s still an integral part of who I am. In fact, I can’t imagine leading my businesses any other way. While I’m not perfect, I have found that the more I get to know God and His great love for me, the more I want to follow His leading in every single area of my life.

I am truly humbled that people in my past took the time to tell me about Christ and how to have a real relationship with Him. When I learned I could talk to Him openly AND I could even hear Him talk to me, my life was never the same. It’s been on my heart that not everyone had that opportunity given to them. Just two weeks ago a colleague of mine who I’ve done business with for years invited me to lunch. As we sat across the table from each other he confessed that the main purpose for this particular meeting was to ask me how I hear the voice of God. He hears me talk about it often, and he wanted to learn more. Man, did this get me excited! This is the exact reason why I work so hard to share the hope that is within me. I want others to find that hope too and live the abundantly full life that comes from following God’s voice. A full and abundant life doesn’t mean an abundance of money, but rather an abundance of peace. I have peace in my relationship with Christ and can confidently rest in him. He guides me in both troubled times and wonderful times.

For over a year, I’ve been working with an incredible team of people who share my passion to help people in the marketplace learn to hear and rely on the voice of God. We’ll be launching a new website later this month dedicated to helping business men and women (and really any man or woman) discover the hope and true identity Christ has for them. Our team will be posting blogs, podcasts, and other material to help people on their path to living out God’s purpose… especially in the marketplace. One of the first pieces of material I will offer on the website when it launches is a free ebook titled, “Hearing God’s Voice Every Day”. I describe the process I use each day to listen for, hear, and respond to the voice of God. These are the very steps I learned in college that have shaped my life ever since. Be on the lookout for my post on how to access that resource when we launch the site.

My prayer is that many more people will hear how God inspires every action I take as a father, husband, and yes – even a business leader – and be equipped to allow God to influence them the same way. His ways are truly greater than anything I could come up with on my own. When He is guiding, the plans will not fail!

Mr. Houston, I have started to truly enjoy your messages throughout this platform. If I may add to the messages already posted... I believe anyone that base the development of their business in the believing of Bible principles will always have a win. The Bible states “whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” and whoever does this...”Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” All most be done with the heart, not just from the outside; a principle we learned from the very beginning when Abel and Cain, both gave their offering to the Lord; one was accepted (because of the heart) and one was rejected (because of the heart).

John- I’m really glad to read this from you. The Bible tells us in Matthew 7:12 to treat others as we want to be treated. As an owner of a John Houston Home, I would cherish the opportunity to talk with you about my experience with some of the people you trust to uphold biblical standards on your behalf. I sent you two direct messages in April but haven’t received a reply. Please contact me directly when you have time.
