governance @ Schools – is the most crucial element that is in place so as to ensure that every School / MAT is able to achieve is grading, very mush like a Performance Reviews or Financial Stability of any company or organization.
On the 10th May 2024, two things happened for me personally.
-??????????? Ofsted removed Governance from its Sub-Categories
-??????????? I stood down as Chair of a MAT (After 5+ years of voluntary service)
?
governance in many ways is the soul of any School or MAT, it is their to ensure that due diligence is performed, it is a critical friends in time of need, yet always challenges the SLT in ways so as to ensure that when a School undergoes its 4 yearly performance review (which in many ways it is) ALL schools, should be able to meet an overall grading of GOOD.
?
It any school does not meet GOOD, then it is GOVERANCE that has failed in its duty to prepare the school, and through various forms such as Monitoring Visits, ?Budget Reviews, Governing Boday meeting through to many other ways in which volunteers support a local school.? Therefore if GOVERANCE is managed correctly, and monitoring is constantly reviewed, then when the Performance Review is announced everyone should be ready to deliver.
?
I can waffle, so want to keep this as short as possible, in many ways should Ofsted be governed by the same mechanism that every school is governed by its own independent ?Govering Boday, and shouldn’t we have a far simple grading system in place such as:
?

GOOD
Meets Expectations
Exceeds Expectations
Outstanding
?
It is that simple.?? Governance should be able to ensure that every School meets GOOD, if they are unable to do so then it is the Local Governing Body / Governing Boday who has failed and therefore the Right Interventions should be in place to support them.
?
Ultimately – If A School Does Not Pass its Performance Review, then it is the Governing Boday who has FAILED and not the School Head Teacher / Principal.
