What Does Freedom Mean to You?

What Does Freedom Mean to You?

Freedom and wealth are two terms often intertwined, yet they are concepts that are defined differently for each individual. In my discovery meetings with business owners, I often ask what freedom means to them, and 9 times out of 10, the answer will be "the freedom to do what I want, when I want." But isn't that also the true definition of wealth?

Wealth is more than just the accumulation of material possessions. It's a state of abundance in various aspects of life – be it time, relationships, hobbies, or even self-growth. I recently had my understanding of wealth expanded by spending a week with my friend Anthea, a person wealthy in more ways than one.

A Week with Anthea: The Epitome of True Wealth

Anthea lives a life that many would define as truly wealthy. She sold her successful business a few years ago and has gone on to build her “next chapter” business successfully.?

Anthea has carved a wealthy life of freedom characterized by:

  • Leisurely Mornings: She has the freedom to enjoy her mornings at a relaxed pace, savoring a cup of coffee by the lake, and embracing the calm start to her day.
  • Curating Relationships: Anthea chooses to surround herself with people who inspire and expand her, shunning the energy vampires who might drain her vitality. ? She is proud of her relationships with her husband and daughter, showcased in family photos in their new Lakehouse.
  • Pursuing Interests: Whether it's spending two hours on a Tuesday afternoon preparing food because she felt inspired to do so or exploring market stands for beautiful flowers and treats, Anthea enjoys the freedom to indulge in her hobbies.
  • Growing Wealth Thoughtfully: By working with the right advisors, she maintains control and freedom to grow her wealth strategically.
  • Traveling Soulfully: For Anthea, traveling is more than a hobby; it's a soul-filling activity that she embraces wholeheartedly.
  • Selective Clientele: As the CEO of her business, Anthea has the autonomy to choose her clients, aligning her work with those she can truly benefit.

How My Experience with Anthea Expanded My Own Wealth

My time with Anthea not only taught me about wealth but also enriched my life in ways I hadn't anticipated. To witness a wealthy life as an observer in real-time and not just as an academic concept was enlightening.

The ability to control our time, relationships, and passions equates to a wealth that is uniquely ours. It encourages us to invest in experiences, connections, and self-growth, rather than mere material possessions. It also shows that doing the work of planning for the future and then executing can pay off for many years – taking this concept from important right through to urgent.

A Thought to Ponder

"Proximity is Power. If you can get proximity with people who are the best in the world, things can happen because of all the people they know, the insights they have, and the life experience they have. They can save you a decade of time by one insight." – Tony Robbins

Indeed, being in close proximity to those who live a life of true wealth can inspire us to redefine our own meaning of wealth and freedom. It's an opportunity to learn, grow, and perhaps even save a decade of our lives by gaining insights from those who have walked the path before us. I love that Anthea is now using all of her wisdom, skills, and experience in various ways, whether its helping insurance brokerages protect their business value,? mentoring entrepreneurial couples,? or helping entrepreneurs in a time of crisis.? ? She has even started creating in-person events where she brings groups of business owners together.?

Conclusion

Wealth and freedom are not just abstract concepts but tangible experiences that we can curate in our lives. It's about the freedom to make choices that align with our values, passions, and dreams. By shifting our focus from mere financial accumulation to a more profound understanding of wealth, we unlock a life of fulfillment, joy, and true freedom. What does wealth mean to you? Let this question guide your journey toward a life of authentic abundance. And we would love to help you on this journey.

I've heard it said that there are 2 ways to be wealthy: One is to have lots of money and the other is to not need it. Ideally, we land in the middle, which is to have more than we need to live the full life we want. The only way to do that is to decide first what a rich life means for you, then build your situation to give it to you. Most people think they will build their perfect life only after they become rich. Knowing your destination has to come first. -written from my laptop on my cross-Continent, 4 month, #vanlife journey
