What does faith have to do with leadership?

In A Leader's Journal, I share my personal reflections on leadership at the intersection of faith and work. I pray these articles would serve as encouragement for you, whether you are a young leader like myself or a seasoned one.

What does faith have to do with leadership?

“I made my plan, I hashed this out at the beginning of the year — I don’t need faith when I have my knowledge and expertise.”

At least that’s what one is tempted to think before the storms of life come and tear apart the perfect plan we’d created.

When we think of great leaders, we think of people who believed that the impossible could be done.

It goes back to why people will remain loyal to a leader, sometimes with a loyalty that could cost them their lives.

Because that leader fills them with the drive to push forward, to do more than they thought they could. It’s the leader who perseveres when the rest are retreating. And it’s a principle that could be found in business, politics, and beyond.

Of course, one could say that there are leaders who are simply followed out of necessity.

In business, it looks like a company whose employees only care about their paychecks and don’t feel inspired at work by their boss, but that’s not really a leader; it’s a manager.

And management isn’t the same as leadership.

So, why lead with faith?

To me, it’s because if we don’t move forward believing that – what some people would call impossible – can happen, then we won’t be leaders people will think are worth following for long at all.

The Bible defines faith as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1).

I might not see the end of the road as a leader yet, especially as a young one, but I want to lead with a faith that inspires others to achieve more than they (or other people) thought they could.

Lead with faith, dare to do the impossible.

No one wants to follow someone who’s scared, so have the faith to overcome that fear and dare to be radical.

If you have faith, those you lead will soon learn to have faith too.

Hi Emmanuel . Great article, nice to get an insight into your belief system. I am a senior at FIU biomedical engineering program and I am trying to find a project sponsor. Are you aware of any opportunities EDM may have to work with my team? Thank you so much.
