What does the Facebook update mean?

We’ve all seen the Facebook update - but what does it ACTUALLY mean? Are we facing Facebook DOOM?!
Well… before you stab a pencil into your Mark Zuckerberg voodoo doll, hear me out.
TD;LR: It’s not the end of the world. This will be good for those of you creating great content and cleverly advertising.
Cream rises to the top.
Mark said: “…you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media. And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard -- it should encourage meaningful interactions between people.”
See that last line.
As businesses we now need to work harder to encourage meaningful interactions between people/build community.
Facebook has and always will be a social platform; a platform for people to come and speak to friends and families.
As businesses, we’ve ALWAYS competed against that. We’re competing for space on the newsfeed against a users real interests. It might just get a little harder :)
The average watch time for a video on Facebook is 6 seconds.
Which for Facebook is EMBARRASSING. In terms of attention span, there’s sweet FA. Users are passively using Facebook, scrolling through watching videos, but not truly engaging.
Like the couple that go out for ‘date night’ but sit on their phones (probably, ironically, watching videos on Facebook)
Pay attention to Facebook Watch
This is where Facebook watch comes into play… Facebook are going after ‘show’ type content. This is massive and this is how you should play it:
What you’re probably doing right now:
- Posting a video every so often with no real theme
What you should be aiming for now:
- Post regular amazing content that fans tune into watch and engage with each other over
There will be a day on Facebook where you’re competing in the news feed against friends and family as well as content like live streams of sport.
It’s not the end of the world. It just means you’re gonna have to work a little harder - but then, who doesn’t like a challenge? ;-)
Ps. If you complain about changes platforms make, suck it up. It’s their playing field and you play by their rules…

6 年Gavin, would love to have read all that but the double line spacing put me off! Your stuff is good enough that you don't need to to the stat-boosting tricks.
