Application Season is on in full swing and my clients are busy preparing to send their applications to their dream organizations, dream universities and some of them are also preparing to write essays and applying to various scholarships and fellowships.
What do all of these things, seemingly disparate, have in common?
- Targetted - Whenever you are writing anything, know your audience. Who will be reading your piece? What is their background? If you are applying to an organization, how do your values match theirs? If you are applying for fellowships and scholarships, who do they typically award? What in your body of work aligns with their values? Play up those aspects in your application
- Authentic - Be honest. When asked to talk about yourself, don't force fit anything. Be sincere and genuinely try to find commonalities
- Succinct- In a cover letter, talk about the specific job at hand, not your life history. Your resume and cover letters are marketing documents, not your mini autobiography ( Although I admit, it's very tempting to provide more and more and more information). Similarly, for scholarships and fellowships, make sure your writing is succinct and addresses the questions asked of you.
