What does double glazing do?

Double glazing has many benefits, and there is a real science behind how well it performs. Some systems will perform better than others, however what is outlined below will be common through all double glazing systems.
Firstly, double glazing will reduce noise. Different sounds travel at different frequencies. When a sound is emitted and meets an object, in this situation glass; a percentage of sound is reflected, a percentage is absorbed, and a percentage is transmitted through the glass to the other side. In a double glazed system sound needs to travel through two panes of glass instead of just one. The second pane of glass acts as another layer of insulation, reducing the amount of sound waves that travel through the system. In addition to this, a wider cavity between the two panes of glass, preferably filled with a pressurised gas significantly reduces the travel of sound. Windows are the one of the weakest sound proofing points in a home, because sound travels through the path of least resistance. This is why it is essential to have windows that have a proper seal.
Noise Reduction
Secondly, double glazing will increase the energy efficiency of a building. In a similar way to sound proofing, the additional pane of glass reduces heat that is transferred through the glass. This works both in the hot and cooler temperatures. In summer; heat into the building is reduced, keeping a cool temperature inside, and in winter; heat is kept inside reducing the amount that escapes, keeping the building warm. This limits the amount of heating and cooling that is required, and maintains a comfortable temperature inside for longer.

Thirdly, the second pane of glass acts as an additional level of security in our homes. Statistics show that criminals generally enter into homes by a side patio door or window, and not often through the front door as many believe. Criminals don’t tend to break the glass to enter into a house due to noise it creates, and the obvious location of entry for the owners to report. Breaking glass is generally a last resort, and in a double glazed unit, criminals are more reluctant to break a second pane due the noise created from the first pane. The main way criminals quickly gain access is with simple tools like screw drivers, by simply lifting the opening portion of the window up and off the hinges to gain access. Which is why it is essential to also consider frames which are equipped with burglary proof bolts.
