What does the data tell us about fitness?

Imagine a world where we use actual data to make healthy decisions. That's no longer a dream; it's now a reality when using data-driven insights into our health and fitness.

Recent WHOOP and Tonal data highlight a paradigm shift in fitness routines, emphasizing strength, longevity, and recovery.

Recovery Takes Center Stage: The majority of WHOOP users are now focusing on rest and recovery, reducing alcohol intake, and integrating practices like ice baths, creatine, and red light therapy.

A New Approach to Soreness: Tonal's data reveals users' tendency to avoid leg workouts, prioritizing comfort and reduced soreness.

Shifting to Longevity: Fitness habits are now more longevity-oriented, as evidenced by:

  • WHOOP's top activity loggers are, on average, 45 years old.
  • 37% of Tonal's user base aims for a longer, healthier life.
  • Older users of Tonal show 12% higher consistency in workouts than younger ones.

Holistic Health Gains Traction: Users are embracing a holistic view of health. Improved sleep quality is linked to consistent sleep schedules and exposure to morning sunlight. Eating habits restricted to daylight hours also contribute to better sleep.

Routine and Consistency in Exercise: Regularity in workout times, especially morning routines, leads to more effective and longer exercise sessions. The adoption of 'exercise snacks'—shorter, more frequent workouts—is rising.

Redefining Strength Training: Women diversify their workouts, preferring a 60:40 split between strength training and activities like yoga, HIIT, and dance-cardio.

Rise of Community and Outdoor Activities: Group and outdoor exercises, including pickleball, soccer, and hiking, have significantly increased in popularity.

What does it mean?

The data indicates a shift in fitness attitudes, with a growing focus on comprehensive well-being, recovery, and a balanced approach to exercise and lifestyle.

To me the biggest opportunity with health data is not around what decisions to make to be healthier: Most people generally know those things. The big opportunity is in aiding & motivating people to actually make those decisions, especially when the benefits from those decisions aren't realized immediately.

This is interesting. Two days per week I work in a PT clinic housed within a gym and I was just thinking about how much has changed in what people do in the gym over the last 30 years. I love that technology is part of the observation of these changes. Thanks for the article.
