What Does Courage Mean to You?
Louis Katz
Keynote Speaker. Coach. Courage Catalyst. Think of me as a mini MBA—minus the debt, plus a whole lot more fun. I teach leadership and courage through laughter, music, and real-world stories that stick.
The world's a messy place, full of daily challenges and uncertainties. In this world, courage stands as a beacon of strength and resilience. But what does it truly mean to be courageous? Beyond the well-trodden path of "acting in spite of fear," courage manifests in myriad ways in our personal and professional lives.
Before we dive into the diverse perspectives on courage, let me share why I’m the right person to talk to your group about this essential quality. I’m not a soldier or a first responder. I haven’t faced a life-threatening illness, and I have all my limbs. I’ve lived a comfortable life and, while I’ve run a business, I haven’t done anything that would be considered exceptional in the corporate world. My experiences as a photographer, writer, and standup comic might seem unremarkable compared to the grand acts of heroism we often associate with courage.
However, what sets me apart is my unwavering willingness to go anywhere and talk to anybody about courage—about living large, being bold, having faith, and fearing nothing. I’m ready to face my biggest fear: the fear of appearing foolish, in order to ignite the power of courage within you. It’s this commitment that drives me to help you push beyond your perceived limits and achieve more than you ever thought possible.
As part of the Let's Ask Louis! initiative, I reached out to a diverse group of individuals to gain their unique perspectives on what courage means to them. The responses were enlightening, and I hope they inspire you to reflect on the role of courage in your own journey. (Note: Names have been changed to protect privacy.)
Finding the Courage to Innovate
"For me, courage is about innovation—taking the leap to create something new when the outcome is uncertain. It's about challenging the status quo and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Innovation is inherently risky, but courage drives us to explore uncharted territories." — "Megan," Improv for Teams Expert
Courage in Vulnerability
"Courage is about vulnerability. It's the willingness to admit when you don't know something and ask for help. It's about opening up and sharing your true self with others, even when it's uncomfortable. Vulnerability fosters genuine connections and authentic leadership." — "Jesse," Entrepreneur
Standing Firm in Your Values
"To me, courage is standing firm in your values, even when they are unpopular or lead to difficult choices. It's about having the integrity to do what's right, not just what's easy. In business and in life, staying true to your principles requires a deep sense of courage." — "Manny," Management Consultant
Embracing Change
"Embracing change is a form of courage that often goes unrecognized. It involves stepping out of your comfort zone and adapting to new circumstances, whether in your career or personal life. Embracing change means recognizing the potential for growth and improvement, even when it's daunting." — "Nicole," Recruiter
Resilience in the Face of Setbacks
"Courage is resilience in the face of setbacks. It's about picking yourself up after a failure and continuing to move forward. Courage is not just about the initial act of bravery but the sustained effort to keep going despite the obstacles." — "Ray," Investor and Author
Why Courage is Essential
These perspectives show that courage is multifaceted and deeply personal. But beyond being merely desirable, courage is essential. In the ever-evolving landscape of our lives and careers, courage serves as the catalyst for progress and innovation. Without it, we remain stagnant, unable to reach our full potential or drive meaningful change.
Driving Innovation and Growth
Courage propels us to explore new ideas and ventures, sparking innovation that can lead to groundbreaking advancements. It’s through courageous decisions that we can push the boundaries of what’s possible and create lasting impact.

Resilience Through Adversity
Resilience in the face of setbacks is perhaps the most enduring form of courage. It keeps us moving forward despite challenges, turning obstacles into stepping stones for future success.
When Lack of Courage Proves Catastrophic
While the benefits of courage are clear, the consequences of lacking it can be dire. History is replete with examples where the absence of courage has led to catastrophic outcomes:
The Sinking of the Titanic
The tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912 is often attributed to a lack of courage to address known safety concerns. Despite warnings about icebergs and the ship's insufficient number of lifeboats, critical decisions to slow down or prepare adequately were not made. The reluctance to act decisively cost over 1,500 lives.
The Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster
In 1986, the Challenger space shuttle disintegrated shortly after launch, killing all seven crew members. Engineers had raised concerns about the O-rings in cold temperatures, but the decision-makers lacked the courage to delay the launch. This failure to prioritize safety over schedule had devastating consequences.
Financial Crisis of 2008
The financial crisis of 2008 was exacerbated by a lack of courage among financial institutions and regulatory bodies to enforce prudent practices and address risky behaviors. The fear of market repercussions and peer pressure led to decisions that spiraled into a global economic meltdown.
My Greatest Fear
As we reflect on the role of courage in our lives, I want to share my greatest fear: the fear of appearing foolish. This fear is not unique to me—it resonates with many who strive to be accepted, respected, and understood. But it is precisely this fear that I confront head-on, because I believe that overcoming it can unlock immense potential.
By facing this fear, I open the door to vulnerability, authenticity, and connection. It allows me to stand before you today, not as an infallible figure, but as someone who is willing to embrace discomfort and challenge the status quo. I hope that by sharing my journey, I can inspire you to face your own fears and discover the courage within you.
