What Does Courage Look Like To You?

What Does Courage Look Like To You?

Depends, right?

On Monday, here in Australia, we honoured those who fought at Gallipoli in the First World War - it was ANZAC Day.

I can only imagine the courage it took those soldiers to go ashore and fight.

What I do know is that “courage” takes on many guises.

To some, it takes courage to get out of bed in the morning and face the day.

To some, it takes courage to face a bully.

To some, it takes courage to look in the mirror.

So what does courage look like to you?

In what situations in your life have?you?shown courage?

Courage is definitely subjective so if you find yourself looking at someone else’s situation eg climbing a mountain (either physically or figuratively), and think “I could never do that!”…

STOP right there!!

You have your own challenges which take/have taken courage which those others would recognise in you (even if you can’t see that yourself).

“Why is she going on about courage?” you may be thinking…

Well, if you look back in your life, to those times when you?did?exercise courage, what valuable lessons did you learn?

What wisdom was hidden in that challenge?

How can you share that wisdom to others facing a similar situation?

By sharing your story,

Sharing your life lessons,

Sharing your hard-won wisdom!

And that takes (yep, you’ve guessed it!)

COURAGE!

Our stories are the most profound, inspiring and personal things we can share.

Other people can benefit from our experience (in my world, no situation is ever wasted or in vain if you and others can learn from it)

if it is shared in a way that makes sense - to the heart as well as the head!

How do you do that?

By telling a “structured” story!

“What’s a structured story, Wendy?”

Good question!

I’m not talking about an obvious formula a+b=c that you can spot a mile off.

That feels inauthentic,

contrived,

false.

What I?am?advocating is a way to tell a story that has a definite purpose, direction, outcome and

takes your audience along for the ride,

hanging on your every word and

not zoning out or checking their phone!

I’m running a workshop to explain and give you experience in 2 such structures to have in your tool belt when telling stories.

PRO TIP #1

Write down two or three situations in your life where you have gained valuable lessons that other people could benefit from.

Think in terms of

  • What was the situation? Get specific and write down all the emotions involved.
  • What did you do that showed courage? Be clear and specific re the steps you took.
  • What did you learn from the situation? How did life change for you as a result of your actions? Again write down lots of specifics and the emotions that went with them.

This forms the basis of your structured story.
