What does a circular economy look like in the furniture industry?

A circular economy minimizes waste and makes the most out of its resources. In a typical or linear economy, products are manufactured, used, and then thrown away, negatively impacting our environment, and stripping valuable resources from the community.

Like a circular economy, Better Source and Greener Source work together to keep office furniture and materials out of landfills by reselling, donating, and/or recycling as much as possible.

How does this apply to the furniture industry? Here are five ways we apply our practice to a circular economy:

1. Reuse and durability: Quality office furniture is designed to last and is easy to repair if needed. By reusing office furniture, we’re making it available to businesses and nonprofits in need instead of throwing it away.
2. Refurbishing: Instead of disposing of unwanted or excess furniture, we help businesses completely decommission office spaces and repurpose items eligible for resell, donation, or recycling.
3. Recycling: When we decommission a space, we carefully inspect every piece of furniture for quality and safety. Whenever necessary, we break down furniture by material to be recycled instead of thrown out.
4. Waste diversion: Our sustainable approach to office furniture aims to minimize waste and help the community. When a company has unwanted or excess furniture, we step in to facilitate the entire decommissioning process, including re-homing furniture items. By doing so, we eliminate furniture waste.
5. Furniture life cycle: Giving office furniture a second life creates new opportunities for the community, our clients, partners, and beneficiaries. By creating value for both businesses and nonprofits, we’re extending the lifecycle of quality, stylish office furniture.
