What Does China Want?
With regular news of the Chinese buying up foreign businesses, from food producers, to cinemas and football clubs, I am often asked what it is that China is looking for.
The simple answer: pretty much everything. There are a lot of people, and they have a lot of money. China is attempting to shift its economy from producing and exporting; to creating, servicing and consuming - moving up the value chain to support the increasing expectations of its people in terms of quality of life, job opportunities, and personal wealth - and recognizing that with an aging population, increased costs, and rapid changes being brought about to production, distribution and consumption by technology, the previous economic model could not sustain the required level of economic growth.
The detailed answer: China's 13th Five Year Plan (2016-20) sets out what China is looking to achieve. In summary, China is looking to evolve the economy towards innovation and sustainable economic growth, in particular promoting certain sectors and technologies, organically and through overseas acquisition: modern agriculture; food processing; logistics & nutrition; biotechnology; next generation IT; advanced manufacturing; new materials; clean energy; modern transport; ocean, space, polar exploration; environment protection & recycling; health; urbanization; disaster prevention & response.
It is a pretty extensive shopping list, so brush up your Chinese, and seize the opportunity.
