What does ADME stand for?
My friend, Dr. Masoud Jamei , Senior VP of R&D at Certara UK, Simcyp Division, has suggested that I write and publish my weekly posts on #pharmacokinetics (PK) #concepts as newsletter articles instead of regular LinkedIn posts. His suggestion is simply great! Hence, I am publishing my previous posts as articles now. Gradually, I shall start writing new articles. For those who had read my previous posts, I seek your patience and understanding.
I want to talk about 'very' basic?#pharmacokinetics?#concepts?(#1)
What is?#pharmacokinetics? People always talk about?#ADME?of drugs.?#ADME?refers to absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs. True or false?
'Pharmaco' refers to drugs. 'Kinetics' refers to quantitative movement of drugs in body (animal or man). Taken together,?#pharmacokinetics?is a discipline that studies how the body handles the drug when it is administered.?#Pharmacokinetics?connects a given dosing regimen (e.g. dose, dosing frequency, dosage form, route of administration) to the exposure of drug within the blood circulation. This exposure is in turn important in defining the therapeutic (pharmacological) and/or adverse (toxicological) outcomes.

#False.?#ADME?refers to absorption, distribution, metabolism and?#excretion?of drugs. In fact, both metabolism and excretion of drugs contribute to their elimination from the body. When a parent drug is metabolized by enzymes in our body to form metabolites, it is eliminated. When a parent drug is excreted into urine (via kidney) or feces (via bile secreted by liver), it is eliminated. Hence, next time when we talk about?#ADME?of drugs, we must remember that E refers to?#excretion?and not elimination!
These same?#pharmacokinetics?concepts apply to any foreign substances (i.e. xenobiotics) that are consumed by or administered into our body such as food substances, cosmetics, vitamins and health supplements. Hence, understanding?#pharmacokinetics?#concepts?is important for appreciating our general health and wellbeing as well.
