What does 16,000 tonnes of CO2 do to the UAE?

Following our recent article “Should delivery vehicles go electric in the UAE” we were asked to help define what the 16,000 tonnes of CO2 produced does to our environment.

Based on the fact that 12,000 petrol delivery motorcycles in the UAE produce more than 16,000 tonnes per year, this article helps show in consumer terms the affects this has to our environment and how together, we can make the change.

What does the 16,560 tonnes of CO2 equate to?

Would fill a modest 16-storey building (with a 1,250 sq feet footprint with average height of 13 feet) or a 20,000 sq feet warehouse!

This is a 20,000 ft2 warehouse, this is filled every year with CO2 from petrol motorcycles in the UAE alone.

  • 272,831 seedling trees grown for 10 years
  • 3,440 Passenger vehicles driven for one year
  • 64,694,974 kms driven by an average passenger vehicle
  • 2,743 homes’ electricity use for one year
  • 21,157 acres of forests could have been protected in one year
  • 37,507 barrels of oil consumed
  • 2,066,077,603 number of smartphones charged

We want to help visualise the alarming statistics and these figures are just for the UAE! Within the GCC these figures would be enough to cover the landmass of tens of miles of desert (actual volumes of motorcycles in use in the GCC can’t be obtained).

Motorcycles emitted far more smog-forming hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen, as well as the toxic air pollutant carbon monoxide. The motorcycle uses 28% less fuel than the comparable car and emitted 30% fewer carbon dioxide emissions, but they emitted:
416% more hydrocarbons
3,220% more oxides of nitrogen and
8,065% more carbon monoxide

It’s so much more than a mouthful of statistics to digest, what do they really mean?

ONE MOTO have been running the numbers and lobbying for change, for Dubai to become a smart city it needs to embrace change, which is exactly their mandate. With a vision of 90% of all limousine transport to be electric by 2026 the UAE is poised for a monumental shift towards EV, yet what other changes does that bring to light? With passenger transport already a focal point of transport EVolution, we have explored the Why should delivery vehicles should go electric. The need is now and ONE MOTO have built a business on it.

Here are some very alarming figures:

  • NUMBER OF Petrol Motorcycles on UAE roads 12,000
  • COST OF FUEL per litre AED 2.20
  • AMOUNT OF FUEL USED per bike per month AED 540
  • AMOUNT OF GALLONS PER TANK 37.42
  • AVERAGE REFUELLING PER WEEK 2.7
  • ANNUAL FUEL USAGE 12,000 Motorcycles 58,195,584
  • ANNUAL FUEL COST 12,000 Motorcycles AED 77,760,000

Many companies aren’t focused on the environmental savings or their CO2 footprint (and there are much worse pollutants within this ‘cocktail of damage’), understandably so. Many look at the cost implications of switching to electric or other modes of transportation.

So, if we were to show you how you can save the cost of a delivery fleet within just one year, without negatively affecting your budgets, would this be of interest? This is of course for you to decide and action.

So true. I'm trying to think of how many times we needed an electric pick up on the way home growing up. And can you imagine if the bicycles had only been electric we took from cambridge home! I'm still recovering from that! #greatdays
