What To Do If You’ve Been Laid Off

Corporate layoffs have been coming at a furious pace lately, and with Meta announcing an additional 10,000 layoffs coming in the next few weeks it’s completely natural to be concerned.

If you happen to find yourself in this situation then I’m sure you realize it can be a challenging and emotional experience. Here are some steps that you can take to help you navigate through this difficult time:

1. Take time for yourself: It's important to give yourself time to process your feelings, reflect on your goals, and plan your next steps carefully.

2. File for unemployment: Check with the labor department in your area to find out what benefits you may be eligible for. Chances are it won’t be enough, but it’s better than nothing and it will hopefully buy you enough time to get things back on track.

3. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile: Make sure your online presence and your resume are up-to-date, as you may need them to apply for job opportunities in the future.

4. Reach out to your network: Let your network know that you are looking for new opportunities. Line up those who can provide you with a professional reference. Reach out to recruiters specializing in your field. Make this your job for the time being.

5. Explore new career paths: Consider career paths that you may not have thought of before, and look into training or education programs that can help you gain the necessary skills.

6. Stay positive: Remember that this is just a temporary setback and that you have skills and experience that are valuable in the job market

7. Freelance or pick up contract roles: This will keep some money coming in, give you the opportunity to show your worth to potential new employers, keep your spirits up and keep your skills sharp.

Hopefully this is a short-term situation, but make sure you’re prepared and that you maintain a positive attitude and a workable plan should you find yourself in this situation. With a solid plan, a bit of luck and perseverance you’ll pull through and maybe even find yourself in a better situation that the one you left.?
