What to Do if You're Immediately Removed from Your Job

The New York Times has just reported that president Donald Trump has removed Anthony Scaramucci from his position as communications director. The news comes only days after Scaramucci's hiring earlier this month. Hey, if it could happen to Scaramucci, it could happen to you. Here's what to do if you're immediately removed from your job.

Don't beg for your job. The decision has been made and all the begging in the world isn't going to change your boss's decision to fire you. However, here's what you can do. You can ask your boss if he'll allow you to resign, so you can leave with a clean slate. If you go this route, it's important to know that you may not be eligible to receive unemployment benefits. That is, unless you negotiate upfront that your boss will not contest your claim.

Negotiate like your life depends on it! Bosses are always worried when they have to remove someone from a job. Thoughts such as, "What will this person be telling others about the organization? or "How will this termination reflect on me?"are quite common. Those with a heart are concerned about how the person they're about to fire will be able to provide for themselves and possibly their family.

Ask for a minimum of two weeks of severance for every year served. If you're like Scaramucci, and you've only got 10 days to your name, then don't expect much in the way of severance. However, if you don't ask for something, you'll never know what you may have left on the table.

Ask for a letter of recommendation. Okay, so before you write to me to tell me no one reads those darn letters, hear me out. You boss is less likely to bad mouth you to whomever calls for a reference, after writing a letter touting all the great things you did while under his employ.

Don't badmouth your boss. I get it. You're angry right now and you want to lash out at someone. Do your future self a favor and don't publicly shame your boss. Call a friend and get your anger out over coffee or a cocktail. Then turn your energy into something constructive like rebuilding your career.
