What Do Your Employees Really Want? Spoiler: It’s More Than Just Free Coffee

Let’s face it: keeping employees happy is a bit like trying to keep a plant alive. Sure, you can water it aka pay them, but if you’re only giving them the basics, they’re not going to thrive. So, as a headhunter and career coach, I get the scoop to what they really want and being the sharing human I am here is the list in no particular order:

  1. Free Coffee.. JOKING! I did once have someone say their bonus of Ham at Christmas was a real perk but I digress.. Here is the REAL list:

1. A Secret Sauce

Everyone likes a little love now and then. A simple “great job!” or “you really nailed that presentation!” can go a long way. Think of it like adding a little spice to a dish—it’s the small things that pack the most flavor. Regular recognition not only boosts morale but also lets your employees know you see and value their hard work.

2. The Unicorn of Employment Benefits

We all talk about work-life balance like it’s some mythical creature, but guess what? It’s real, and your employees are hunting for it. Whether it’s the flexibility to work from home in their pajamas or just the ability to leave early for their kid’s soccer game, a little balance can make a world of difference. Let’s be honest, happy employees are productive employees.

3. Show Me the Money

Let’s not beat around the bush—money matters. If you’re paying your employees in peanuts, don’t be surprised when they start monkeying around with other job offers. Fair compensation isn’t just about the base salary; it’s also about benefits, bonuses, and all the little perks that make working for you a no-brainer.

4. Ability To Climb the Ladder

Nobody wants to be stuck in a dead-end job, no matter how cool the office decor is. Employees want to know there’s room for growth, whether it’s through promotions, professional development, or just learning new skills. Think of it as planting seeds in your garden—give them room to grow, and they’ll bloom.

5. More Than Just Good Vibes

A positive work environment isn’t just about hanging motivational posters or having an office dog (though those are nice). It’s about creating a space where people feel safe, included, and supported. Encourage teamwork, celebrate diversity, and keep the drama to a minimum. It’s all about the good vibes.

6. A Cozy Blanket of Employment

In an ever-changing world, job security is like a warm, cozy blanket on a cold day. Knowing that their job is safe and the company isn’t going anywhere gives employees peace of mind. And let’s be real, no one can focus on work if they’re constantly worried about layoffs.

7. Let Them Take the Wheel

Micromanagement is so last decade. Employees want to be trusted to do their jobs without someone constantly looking over their shoulder. Give them the autonomy to make decisions and solve problems on their own. Not only will they appreciate the trust, but they’ll also take more ownership of their work.

8. Glue to Hold It All Together

Ever played the game of telephone? It’s funny with friends, but not so much in the workplace. Clear, transparent communication from leadership is essential. Employees want to know what’s going on, where the company is headed, and how they fit into the big picture. Keep them in the loop, and they’ll be more engaged.

9. Perks Beyond a Paycheck

We all want to feel like we’re part of something bigger. Employees crave a sense of purpose in their work. They want to know that what they’re doing matters and contributes to a larger goal. Whether it’s making a difference in the community or pushing the boundaries of innovation, give them a reason to care beyond the paycheck.

10. Team Spirit.. SOMETIMES

Humans are social creatures, and the workplace is no different. Employees want to feel like they’re part of a team, not just a cog in the machine. Foster connections through team-building activities, social events, or even just a casual chat over lunch. When employees feel connected to their colleagues, they’re more likely to stick around.

So there you have it! It isn’t rocket science. It’s about understanding their needs and hey, if you throw in some high quality free coffee, that certainly won’t hurt.

Cheers to happy employees and a thriving workplace!

You are right, Jessica Glazer, it isn't rocket science but somehow we often need to be reminded of the things that we know deep down to be obvious and true so that we actually put them into action.

Happy Tuesday Jessica I really enjoyed reading this piece. It’s super important for employers to provide their team members with the ability to grow within the organization and move up. Lateral movements will only get you so far. Thanks for sharing.
