What do you want to be and what success means to you?
What you want to be as you grow up asked the mole… “Kind” said the boy.?
What do you think success is…? “To love,” said the mole.
The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse …by Charlie Mackesy is one of the books in recent months, which had left a great impression on me. I have been asked this question many times, at every stage of life, what I want to be and what success means to me…
When I started to list down, around what I want to be… list emerged something like this…
·??????Fighter pilot at early stage with all the patriotism in me
·??????Indian Civil Services fascinated by power and facilities
·??????Engineering, not that I was interested in, it was one of the possible careers, I knew given I was good at mathematics

I didn’t make it to either, as I grew up, ended up with a goal of having some sort of a job. When you come from an average income family, that is usually the dream… a decent job.
And rest is history, after getting my first job, with hard work, luck and being surrounded by great people and being in right company at the right time, I have made some decent progress in my career [I would like to believe that ??]
However, until know I struggle to answer what I want to be in the next 3-5 years, what is the picture of success for me, honestly, I don’t know how to process and answer this question. I have never been able to have a very planned life… it has been largely a set of unplanned events, which appear as a well thought through journey. ??
I believed in what Oscar Wilde said “if you know what you want to be, then you inevitably become it - that is your punishment, but if you never know, then you can be anything. There is a truth to that. We are not nouns, we are verbs. I am not a thing - an actor, a writer - I am a person who does things - I write, I act - and I never know what I am going to do next. I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun.”
Still the conversation between The Boy and the Mole stuck with me… at any stage of my life, with any kind of work I do, with multiple roles I play on personal front “a daughter … a mom… a wife... a friend...” or on professional front.. ”Employee…Manager…Peer”… I got the answer of what I want to be as I grow up… “Kind” and what success means to me… “To Love…”
I invite you to share, what you want to be as you grow up and what success means to you…. ?
