What do you want, what do you really, really want?

Lying in the sun and relaxing during the summer months, is often a really good time to gently ruminate on the important questions of life.

And given we dedicate so much time in our lives to our work, how we regard our means of earning a living and its value to us might just bubble itself to the forefront of our minds in these more reflective moments.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. Periodically, it can be really productive to ask yourself some really sharp questions about you, your work and your future.

So to help you focus, here are just some of the holiday questions it may be worth asking yourself …

• Am I really, really happy about my current work and if not why not?
• Is it time for a change and how will I know that this is the right moment?
• How well am I valued at work - what do people think and say about my contribution?
• Is the value I add at work fairly recognised and rewarded?
• Am I progressing in my work or am I just treading water - a good test, ask what, if anything, you have added to your CV in the last 6 to 12 months ?
• If I decided to move on, what would I be capable of doing next and perhaps most importantly what is it that I really, really want to do next - more of the same or something entirely different?
• Do I have the energy and motivation right now to make a change in my career direction?
• Is my work too often getting in the way of other important aspects of my life?
• Is this it, or are there bigger and better opportunities out there if only I could be braver and grasp the nettle?

Questions all of which are pretty easy to ask, but often not so easy to answer. Sometimes it suits us to leave them unanswered or maybe more pragmatically, when we come in from the sun, we just thrust ourselves back into our next busy work period and defer addressing our career issues to some unspecified time in the future.

Well perhaps, as this summer of 2024 draws to a close, is the right time to start formulating answers and making concrete plans about the next steps in your career journey.

And as with many important things in life, turning your thoughts into tangible actions might not be best addressed by doing it entirely on your own.
