What Do You Want Less Of?

What Do You Want Less Of?

Thought of the Week | Julie Lawson, CEO

I think a lot about what I want more of: success, money, love, sleep - whatever it is, we think a lot about what we want to increase in our lives. Yet we are overworked, overstimulated, and overburdened, and though are paying a steep mental and physical price, we don't seem ready to stop.

So this week, I'm asking myself and others: what do you want less of?

To get you started thinking of your list, consider:

  • American adults spend an average of 4-5 hours per day on social media, yet complain of loneliness, time management issues, and mental overwhelm. (Goal: Spend less time online)
  • Americans are among the most obese adults in the world, increasing health risks and decreasing our life expectancy. Yet less than 1/3 of us meet the recommended exercise requirements for healthy living. (Goal: Spend less time binge-watching)
  • Americans spend 10-12 hours per month shopping for non-essential products. Additionally, they work extra hours or jobs to uphold a particular lifestyle of consumerism. Yet we feel overwhelmed by things, clutter, and the continual need for more time and space. (Goal: Shop less for things I don't really need)
  • Despite considerable conversation and attention given otherwise, imposter syndrome and low confidence are on the rise. (Goal: Spend less time in self-criticism and worrying about the competition)
  • Nearly half of us are burdened by mental health issues, yet we don't seek therapy, friends, or other systems of support. Instead, we spend time alone wondering if anyone else feels this way. (Goal: Spend less time alone)

There are many more things (ironically, not less) I can add to this list, but the point is to create your own. What relationships, behaviors, material things, or "time-sucks" can you remove from your life to live better?

I also like to think about what I have enough of. Where I feel enough and am enough!

Hmmm, I would say less irritation or anger. I find that I often keep placing myself in situations where I know I am going to be irritated! I have been making an active effort not to place myself in those environments!!
