What do you want to be famous for?
I’ll bet you that’s a question you don’t hear every day and it may be question you don’t ask every day. But should you?
What do you want to be famous for? Hmm .. I’m not talking about celebrity here.. I’m asking you “How do you want to be known? How do you want to be seen in the eyes of others?”
You’re being asked to differentiate your company every day – in the eyes of your customers – and chances are you’ve had lots of meetings to talk about your positioning and your branding, so you know what I mean.
But how do you differentiate yourself as a leader? When people refer to you what do they say? When they interact with you how do they feel?
For 3 decades I’ve been working with organizations who deliver or who aspire to deliver a Customer Experience that’s so outstanding that their customers become advocates and evangelists for their brand and an employee experience that is almost always accompanied by the word “love.”
As you might suspect, in order to deliver those kinds of remarkable experiences outside the company – there’s got to be something really special going on inside.
Some places just put smiles on our faces. For some it's Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks. For some It's TD Bank on a Sunday (Me.) It's the speed of Amazon Prime. It's Zappos shoes paying the shipping both ways so it doesn’t cost you extra to buy a pair of shoes that fit. It’s Garnet Hill’s colorful and flowy clothes and Land’s End soft flannel shirts. It's Disney that transports us to new worlds.
What is your special something? Your secret sauce? What combination of product and service and values and culture will you combine to make your group, company, or department stand out?
What is your special something? When someone interacts with you how do you want them to walk away feeling? That’s a great thing to think about in the morning before people come into your day.
What do you want to be famous for? Remembered for? Known for? What do you want to stand for?

Me? I want to be famous for energizing, elevating and illuminating people. I want to be the spark that lights the fire inside. I want them to walk away smiling!
When you choose to create positive experiences for customers, not as an after thought, but as the "core" of what you exist to do, you give your team an energizing focus, one they can get behind and feel good about supporting. You get more of what you put your attention on because energy flows where intention and attention goes.
When your attention is focused on creating value for those who work with you they have just the right role model for creating value for customers, co-workers, and suppliers. You know, People hear what you say but they see what you do.
Recently while taking a group of young leaders through my "Practice Positive Leadership" course in a Wisdom Circle that I facilitate on zoom, I had them answer this vary question and I was AMAZED at what I heard. I was as proud as if these were my own kids as they expressed how they intended to show up at work.
This is a question you might not have answered for your self. I'm going to suggest you do! You can answer below in the comments! In the meantime be brave enough to ask a few of the people you know and love how THEY perceive you!
One of my favorite questions from Positive Psychology is. "When you see me at my best, what am I doing?" That's what help me craft my own "What do you want to be famous for?" question. Give it a try!
