What do you want? A degree or employability?

Let’s face it. We live in a commercialised world and almost everything is measured in terms of monetary returns. Your investments must reap benefits in the short and long-term. This may especially ring true in times of COVID, when industries around the world are undergoing a fundamental change and unemployment rates are at an all-time high.
As the director of a training company that is at the forefront of providing upskilling solutions to individuals and companies, I know that what the industry needs is a skilled workforce that can adapt and evolve to new technologies in order to deliver results.
But how do you upskill yourself? Traditionally, you would have enrolled in a college course or in a certification Bootcamp with the aim of gaining a degree. These programs may not be as relevant as you would think, in today’s rapidly evolving market scenario.
Here are some questions to get you thinking:
- Will enrolling for expensive boot camps give you the skills and knowledge that companies desire?
- Will you able to gain the benefits of the money and time you invest in these courses?
- Do you know for a fact that the degree you have is recognized and valued by the industry?
- Does your course provide the niche skills that you are looking for?
- Is it worth spending all that money at a time when the future is unpredictable?
Boot Camps Vs Job-Oriented Training
Any boot camp offered by a prestigious institute also has factored in the cost you pay for the brand associated with the institute. This makes these courses very expensive and the ROI does not therefore add up. Also, most of these courses require full-time, dedicated participation, thus hampering a working professional’s chances of enrolling.
Industries today, while hiring, look at the skills a candidate is able to bring to the table, rather than the fancy degrees/universities they may show on their resume.
Technology is always in a state of flux and this requires professionals to continually upgrade themselves. Going to an expensive boot camp and making a huge one-time payment will significantly hamper your ability to invest in yourself on a continuous basis. It is far better to focus on hands-on learning and skill acquisition rather than on the brand offered by any institute.
It is more practical and prudent to invest in focussed short term, high value, flexi courses delivered by industry experts, which provide accelerated learning on specific technology skills. You can thereby ensure a better ROI and employability with hands-on skills that are in demand in the market.
