The next big thing in personal MOBILITY will take a page from the past and apply it to our future. In the USA we have the world's greatest road system. Our roads are in need of investment to preserve our strategic infrastructure. What type of roads should we be building? Dwight Eisenhower understood what a high speed limited access highway system would mean to our modern life. It was a huge LEAP forward after WWII to have roadways ready for, and vehicles capable of doing 70 mph speeds. The lifestyle we enjoy today is dependent on our Interstate highways. We need to be building a highway system safe for 150 MPH speeds, I am going to keep beating this drum until it is heard. Why do I want an AV to drive me around at 50 mph, this is something coming in the future that does for me... what I can do today for myself today... AV NOT the next BIG thing! Not today. But, I can explain how AV would be more meaningful for the every day driver in the future with 150 MPH vehicles.
150 MPH roadways and vehicles WILL be the next big thing in modern mobility. The implications of 150 MPH speeds on commerce and personal freedom would be profound. Start with relieving congested roadways by reducing your time spent on the road by half. High speed is great but, in a world post Covid 19 who wants to get on an airplane or high speed train... who? People that do NOT have the time to sit in a car doing 50 MPH.... THAT is WHO, those who are still dependent on the speed of a train or a plane! If truckers can haul TWICE as many loads in the same number of hours, what happens to their revenue? What would you do with the 5 days that you do not spend sitting in traffic per year? 50 years of work equals 250 days more of enjoying life... I could extol the benefits of 150 mph speeds for days!
NOW, think about what 90% of drivers today would NOT feel capable or comfortable doing... driving at 150 MPH! This is where AV will have it's greatest impact, the ability to do what you can NOT, travel at 150 MPH safely! 150 MPH personal transportation is the new frontier of MOBILITY! How about Detroit Michigan to L.A. in 20 hours? Today people worry about range and charging cycles, when very few folks drive 300 miles in a day. So, why are you worried... the next big thing is NOT 400 mile range! 15 minute charge cycle... maybe the first incremental step
For decades folks have talked about the idea that water is the world's most precious resource, and I agree. Do not conflate what is most important to the world, with what is most important to a human being... TIME is a human being's most precious resource! As a nation we must stand up and claim back our finite and precious TIME, by investing in roadways and technologies to get us there more quickly, with a higher degree of safety.
A REAL advancement in mobility would be to give consumers something they can NOT get today. So, the next big thing in mobility may be a confluence of infrastructure, vehicle propulsion, and AV culminating 150 MPH personal transportation! The advancement of civilization should be measured by the quality of life we live, we can ALL live a better quality of life with 150 MPH personal transportation.
Thanks so much for reading, and I look forward to your thoughts and feedback... What do YOU think is the next big thing in mobility.

Not sure that would reduce congestion - and the vehicles traveling at those speeds might look different - or are we talking hyperloop here? - Where is Robert Heinlein when we need him - "The Roads Must Roll"

If trends continue, the capacity side of the industry will continue promoting big dollar infrastructure projects, resulting in an increasing public deficit and debt, while the supply side of the industry will continue promoting automotive-based solutions that will absorb that capacity and continue to increase household expenditures on transportation. Will we change that trend?
