What do you do if project managers lack the important qualities during an interview?

Thorough evaluation and careful consideration of a candidate's qualifications and fit for the role are paramount to making an informed hiring decision.

If you're interviewing a project manager who seems to be lacking essential qualities, it's crucial to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Here's what you might consider:

Clarify Expectations: Ensure that the job description clearly outlines the necessary qualities and that the candidate is aware of the expectations.

Probe Deeper: Sometimes, candidates might not initially showcase their qualities in the best light. Ask behavioral and situational questions to prompt them to give more detailed examples from their past experiences.

Assess Potential: Determine if the candidate has the potential to develop the necessary qualities. Some skills can be taught, while others, like certain personality traits, maybe more innate.

Consider Fit: Reflect on whether the candidate might be an excellent cultural fit for the team. Sometimes, different qualities bring a new perspective or balance to the team.

Get a Second Opinion: If you're unsure, consider a second interview with another member of your team or a different form of assessment, like a practical task or case study.

Make a Decision: If the candidate definitively lacks critical qualities and there's no indication they can develop them, it may be necessary to continue the search. Hiring someone unsuitable for the role can cost time and resources in the long run.

Remember, the interview process is as much about finding the right person for the role as it is about the candidate demonstrating their suitability. It's essential to be thorough and fair and to keep an open mind.
