What do you need to do to have your "Evergreen" New Year's Resolutions Stick? It's all Interconnected.

What do you need to do to have your "Evergreen" New Year's Resolutions Stick? It's all Interconnected.

As we get ready to button up another year and run arms out wide into the "next" New Year, many of us reflect on the past and what our New Year resolutions were "last year" - and two things become important: What were they and Did we accomplish them? Many people don't remember, and that means that they also didn't accomplish them.

The big question is, why not? For that, we need to start at the beginning.

For MOST of us, three recurring themes top the list of New Year's resolutions — Improving Health, Increasing Wealth, and Improving Our Relationships. Why do these three keep making the list?

Well, good "Physical" health talks to us right where we live! As physical humans, we all need good physical health to live our best and longest lives. When we are not healthy, it costs us financially, as well as relationally. If we are sick and cannot work, we don't make the money we need, and our relationships are stressed.

"Financial" health gives us the resources we need to enjoy life. With it, we have valuable peace of mind, food, housing, clothing, education, entertainment (and more), enabling us to take more risks and enjoy the satisfaction of a life lived to its fullest. Without it, we work WAY to hard & long to make money, so we can have the 'things' and 'lifestyle' we want, which in turn usually causes physical harm as well as relational harm. AND - we all only have so much money, so when we spend TOO MUCH on (you name it, including keeping ourselves healthy or taking care of others), our financial health decreases, which leads to relationship issues.

"Relational" health - because people matter most! Yet, if we spend all our time taking care of family and friends, we find ourselves short on Financial health and resources, causing us stress and quality of life issues, which can also cause physical issues as well.

To have a Good Life, let alone a GREAT life, EVERYTHING HAS TO HAVE BALANCE!

How can you start to make 2024 DIFFERENT?? Start to understand and work toward some balance. (We will address this more in detail over the next few newsletters - so stay tuned!!)

Start with some of the lessons the last few years have taught us:

  1. Just because it 'was a certain way' doesn't mean it has to stay that way or that it even CAN stay that way. (Who remembers Blockbuster?) New options, better options, are coming into play all the time. If we stay educated, balance becomes a whole lot easier!
  2. We CAN take control of our lives... We just have to know the right questions to ask (and who to ask them to).
  3. Everything is intertwined. When one part of our life is impacted detrimentally, it usually affects the other parts of our lives, even if not immediately.

Conclusion

So, how do we achieve a 'different' outcome THIS YEAR? We look at the interconnections and understand that since "everything affects everything", small changes can have big effects:

  1. Be proactive in your decision-making. Be open to learning about new options and asking questions.
  2. Look at costs - monetary, time, and even physical - when you are deciding if a change has more pros than cons.
  3. Start with a few small changes (up to 3, 1 in each area (Physical, Financial, and Relational)) that you really can make a commitment to for at least 60 days. No excuses because You cannot have Success and excuses at the same time.
  4. Remind yourself that Self-care is not Selfish! Physically, emotionally, or in time spent on yourself (all in moderation, of course). When you are always 'giving' and not taking care of yourself (Physically, financially, with time to yourself), that is being Selfish! You cannot continue that way forever, and it is selfish to deny your family & friends of you 'later on'.
