What do you mean by everyone can be a leader?
Bob Ruotolo
ARE YOU A: Life/Mindfulness Coach? Career Coach? Leadership Development Coach? Executive/Business Development Coach?
You got me thinking after our meeting when I heard you make the statement, “Everyone is a leader according to BLT, right!”. I just want to clarify this concept of leadership and how we understand it through the lens of the BLT System.
Yes, everyone may have the potential to be a leader as understood in BLT. Two key words here ‘may’ and ‘potential’. Leadership development is all about identifying and developing capabilities. In BLT leadership is directly related to one’s role and the execution of that role. This is why we start with effective job descriptions including Key Accountabilities, Competencies, and Measures or KPIs. In the person fulfilling that role we are looking for four key attributes or their potential- Self-direction, self-management, self-motivation, and relationship building.
Self-direction is the ability of an individual to see how their role fits into the Vision and Values of the Organization in which that role exists. That person in their role also seeks to collaborate with others in the same and different roles to execute seamlessly to complete common goals and objectives.
Self-management is the ability to develop and implement an action plan that directs one’s efforts to goal completion in an effective and efficient manner.
Self-motivation refers to one’s self-awareness of his or herself of what drives them and where their natural energy forces generate from. What are their desires, core values, visions of their own personal success and linking, these forces to drivers in the organization.
Relationship building focuses on self-esteem and relating to others. It is foundational to be an effective leader. People with good relationship abilities usually have a high EQ.
Hiring and Selection Process and Practices
Your hiring and selection processes are critical in growing and maintaining your BLT performance Culture. Focusing on ‘Fit’ for the role, position, and culture; examining the candidates for mindset, skill sets, and tools to be successful in the assigned position.
Core Values at the Center of the BLT System’s Transformation Model
The BLT System has its own Core Operating Values as it intervenes with individuals, teams, and organization who desire to create, develop, and sustain a Transformation Performance Culture. BLTS is not only a ‘change management’ system, it is a ‘practice’, a ‘way of living’.
BLTS Core Values are: Integrity, Shared Vision, Partnership, and Mutual Success. These values are part of the ‘practice’. I want to clarify how we use Core Values in this System and I will do this in a separate follow up communication and discussion with you. I will elaborate on the BLTS Core Values and differentiate them from your Core Values that are part of your High-Performance Culture.
