What do you do?

What do you do?

It's a question we all get at least a few times a week and maybe even several times a day, depending on your business. How do you answer it? Honestly, I hope. I answer with exactly what we do. "We help business owners make the single most important decision of their professional lives, and sometimes even their personal lives."

Great pitch, right?! What if it's not a pitch. What if its the exact truth. So much time and money is spent on building a business, maintaining a business, growing a business. Is the same time and money dedicated to planning for an eventual exit?

There are few universal truths in this world, right? The earth is round. What goes up, must come down. Our wives are beautiful. I digress. What about this one - YOU WILL LEAVE YOUR BUSINESS ONE DAY.

Whether it be by precision planning and flawless execution by you and your exit planning team, by bankruptcy or liquidation, by sheer luck, or by death or disability. Can't we all agree you will absolutely leave your business?

When you get ready to sell your home, how many of you DIY? Some, right. How many pay commission to Real Estate agents? Are they the smartest men & women in the world? Maybe. Maybe not. But, they specialize in buying and/or selling homes, right. How many real estate agents tell you NOT to sell your home right now? Probably the really good ones, if they have objective and experiential reasons as to why and when a better time would be (hint - we're not talking about telling you not to list in the middle of December and to wait until April ;)

When you need a car, where do you go? When you need help with your marriage where do you go? When you need out of your marriage, where do you go? When you need financial advice, where do you go?

You have answers to all those questions, right? When you need help planning for, designing and implementing your exit strategies to transition ownership from your company, where do you go?

Accountant. Insurance Agent? Attorney? M&A professional? Business Broker? All of these are probably pretty common answers to the question. Which of these professionals has YOUR interests squarely ahead of their own?

Which of these professionals understands the complexities of all areas of your exit? Taxes. Asset Protection. Risk management. Who shares with you the best way to maximize your net return? The broker? Does he or she get paid if you don't sell to a third party? What about your accountant? Do they have the ability to separate from their everyday grind and ensure that they are not letting the tax "Tail" wag the planning "Dog?" Do they also understand the intricacies of an insurance policy? What about the minute details of an investment portfolio?

So, how does a Certified Exit Planner? CExP?know everything about all aspects? We don't. What we do know is how to coordinate a cohesive plan and mobilize your advisory team to work together. We do have knowledge in each area, but we are certainly not the experts looking to replace your CPA, Attorney, etc.
