What do you bring to the party?

What do you bring to the party?

You are here because you want to grow as a leader.?

And maybe you have a team that you need to grow too.?

Are you technically expert at what you do but you want more, and you know that It’s not enough just to be good at what you do????

You now need to create the superpowers of communication, impact and influence in order to maximise your outcomes as a leader.?

You need to be able to talk business, not just tech.

You need to be able to communicate at all levels and be a positive influence in the business.?

You need to be able to bring your team on board and create outstanding performance.?

You need to be able to think strategically, not just down in the weeds of the expertise you have.?

And we already know that what got you here won’t get you there.?

All those years honing your technical expertise made you what you are now.? But it won’t take you to the next level.?

You need to take on new approaches, new techniques and understanding about your team, about you, and about how you fit into the organisation as a whole.?

The Growing Leaders in Business Newsletter focuses on these tools and techniques in a practical and informal way, so you can digest and implement bite sized pieces to upgrade your skills.?

The three essential areas for high performing leaders to master are to create confidence, collaboration and commitment in your teams, peers and investors, and to be able to engage, enable and excite them into coming with you on your journey.??

Each week we focus on different aspects to help you to create these superpowers.

This week we're looking at what you bring to the party...

Or, how you need to show the ROI of you in their business

The CV states great skills, lots of knowledge, great ideas, tech quals coming out of their ears.

But they don’t care about any of that.

Because, when it comes down to who to hire, or who to keep, there is one thing on the mind of the recruiting team.

And that’s ROI!

They need to see that you are worth it to the business, on the basis of the value that you bring.

And the salary and positions that you want are only going to come if you can show how you add value to the business.

A business needs to see how you can help them achieve their goals, deliver the products, and make money.?

And so often I see that this is forgotten by so many.?

Focusing on technical ability is only half the story at a leadership level, in fact, at any level.?But even more so when you are leading others and the business forward.

Every person in the business has a role in making that boat go faster and if you are not, then you are not valuable.

And as leaders, you need to show evidence that you can and are making a difference, that you can improve their results by you showing up.

So, what are they interested in?

Well, everything you do must have a value directly to the business.

·??????Can you get products to market quicker than the next person?

·??????Can you get investors to buy into it?

·??????Can you get your team to get on board and do what needs to be done quickly and productively?

·??????Can you help people come together as a team and collaborate for greater results?

As you can see, none of these areas specify that you have to be able to tick the box of technical skills.?Of course, you need some to be able to know what you are doing, but at every level we have to be able to translate our tech to the business.

Even the canteen staff (if there is such a thing nowadays).

As a CTO, you are the conduit between tech and business, that helps people understand what needs to be done, even if they don’t get the tech.

You are the bridge that helps techies to understand that the product they are creating needs to be ready and stable, not perfect and late, and to think about how lay people might use the product.

You help the leadership team get on board with change that needs to happen.

It's no good being good at code if you can't positively influence the people around you to make the impact on the business.

And it's no good if you love the tech so much that you can't relate it to the business goals or the people.

Because it won’t move the needle on the business enough.

And remember, it has to be that fair trade.

So, what do we need to show?

Well, it’s those additional emotionally intelligent, softer skills of communication, relationship building, trust and collaboration that get us to the next level.

You need to be able to do three things with those skills:

To create enabled, engaged and excited people at all levels.

People who can do what you want them to do, who want to do it with you and want to do it for the cause you and the business stands for.

And getting on top of those three things will mean that you have a huge impact in the business because people will be coming with you, working hard on the vision of the business.

But those skills don’t always come naturally and that means they take a bit of work and understanding, plus time and attention on them.

I did a short live 10-minute training on the subject here

It explains how you can create those three things and how that can increase your value.

And if you would like some help to understand your impact on the business or to create an even bigger ROI of You, then get in touch with me and we can tell you how we help with our CTO Impact Accelerator 12-week programme.
